Overcast shadows and threatening storms… Carl Ryan uncovers the true photographic potential on our local coastline as he relays how he captured his ‘textbook’ image.

The light was fading as dusk began to fall along the huge expanse of Rhossili beach, as I descended the winding path onto to its now deserted shore.

Ominous dark clouds added to the drama of the setting, as they raced across the serpent like, Worm’s Head. The fi rst chills of winter swept keenly in the November wind as the Atlantic rollers surged in the distance. All good fodder for my camera in the expectation of some atmospheric landscapes. This magical place was now a far cry from its more popular mantle as one of Wales’ most scenic summer tourist destinations.

Situated on the western end of the Gower Peninsula in south Wales, and designated within an area of outstanding natural beauty, Rhossili is a magnet for fun-packed family holidays; its spectacular coastline also draws ramblers from far and wide and is one of the major surfi ng venues in the UK.

Towering cliffs, secluded coves and fern clad headlands draws walkers to explore the majestic scenery, the natural fl ora and fauna, as well as its ancient history. Tracks and trails abound and ramblers of all ages and abilities can traverse the many footpaths that criss-cross the area from the impressive Worm’s Head to Burry Holm.

Due to its exposed aspect, Rhossili beach boasts unrivalled thrills and spills for surfers, on both short and longboards. It has consistent surf all year round and the quality is not affected by the tides. The best wind direction is from the east, being sheltered from the southerly winds and Rhossili being the most westerly of the Gower beaches takes the full force of the Atlantic swells. For the discerning surfer looking for the best wave in the most dramatic scenery, then this is the place to go.

For now, as a photographer working in the dying light, Rhossili Beach was all mine.
