Cougar captain Kyle Mun #5, since being repositioned to forward from defense has been on a scoring frenzy, revitalizing the Cougar offensive attack

by Marc Ayotte It was raining, cold and miserable outside but the Campbell boys soccer team still made the trip to Hillsboro-Deering in an attempt to play their season finale against the Hillcats. On a field that coach Steve Levine said “was more suitable for playing water polo,” the visiting Cougars mucked their way to a very important 4-1 victory. The win, improved Campbell’s mark to 10-5-1 for the year and put them in tie with Mascoma Valley Regional who shared the identical record. However, the Cougars were awarded the seventh position tie- breaker by way of edging out the Panthers by three one hundredths of a percentage point in the ratings category, awarding them a first round home game in the playoffs. Under the adverse playing conditions, Levine’s Cougars fell behind 1-0 to the host ‘Cats at the sixteen minute mark. Although Campbell completely dominated the play, they were unable to dent the scoreboard and went into half time trailing by the same score. Levine, pleased with his team’s superior play recalled his frustration at half time; “we just couldn’t put it in the net” adding that the play of the H-D goalie was “out of this world.” The Cougars mounted their second half comeback at the eight-minute mark when Jacob Mercier scored on a penalty kick, knotting the

score at one. Five minutes later, Ben Billings added to his team leading scoring role by finishing off a beautiful crossing pass from teammate Mercier to take a 2-1 lead. In the 63rd minute of the game, senior Kyle Mun’s encore to his three goal senior day performance gave the Cougars a two-goal cushion, with the assist going to J.P. Galvez. Three minutes later, Galvez tallied a goal of his own as the junior forward, on a dazzling pass from Michael Vigeant, beat an H-D defender in the box and ultimately put his shot past the keep to the lower right portion of the goal, resulting in the three goal road win. The Cougars finished a very successful season under first year Cougar coach Levine. The former Methuen, MA, High School soccer coach, who was symbolic with that school’s soccer program for over 30 years, has brought a winning attitude and diligent work ethic to Campbell, which has the Cougars poised and ready to strike during the playoffs. maintained that the regular season was nothing more than preparation for post-season play, indicating that his goal was and is to be one of the final two teams standing, ultimately bringing another championship banner to the rafters in the Cougar den.

Antonio Beaulieu breaks up a passing play on defense

by Sue LaRoche The Broncos were looking for another NHIAA Division 2 victory

when they took on Spaulding on Friday, October 21, the final home game of the season, but the Red Raiders had other ideas as they rolled over the Broncos 39-13. Alvirne was coming off a 62-22 drubbing of Division 3 opponent

Pelham but found much stiffer competition against Spaulding. Spaulding jumped out to an early 13-0 lead on a 65-yard drive and interception for a touchdown return. Alvirne went into the half down 25-0, headed towards a record of 4-4 overall, 2-4 in NHIAA Division 2 football. Tony Beaulieu ripped off a 99- yard kickoff return in the third quarter for the Broncos’ first score of the evening. Chase Clark completed the Broncos scoring with a 7-yard touchdown run in the final quarter.

Alvirne finishes out the season on the road against Bishop Guertin on Saturday, October 29, and at Manchester West on Friday, November 4.
