9/30-11/18/11 Broncos Send Seniors Off in Style


submitted by Jim Tomaswick Last Thursday, Alvirne played host to the Red Raiders of Spaulding at Bronco Stadium. Prior to the game family, friends, coaches and teammates gathered to recognize eight players that would be taking the field for the last time as high school teammates. Seniors Joan Villanueva, Matt Kulch, Ryan Forrence, John Gardner, Zach Melanson, Tyler Lambert, Corey Landry and Jimmy Tomaswick were all honored on for their hard work, dedication and commitment to the soccer program during the past four years at Alvirne. After the festivities the teams took the field each playing their last game of the season. Spaulding came out aggressively putting


significant pressure on the Bronco’s defense but seniors Zach Melanson, Tyler Lambert and Matt Kulch refused to bend. The Red Raiders were able to get off five shots on goal in the first half that were swallowed up by senior keeper Jimmy Tomaswick (nine saves). Alvirne seniors Joan Villanueva and Ryan Forrence had solid games at midfield sparking the Broncos with their hustle and tenacious play. A little over midway through the half the Broncos took a flurry of shots which rebounded off the Spaulding defense.


One rebound found the foot of freshman Brett Richardson who put away his second goal of the season and gave the Broncos a 1-0 lead at intermission. Similar to the start of the game, Spaulding came out strong in the second half looking to even the match and again Alvirne’s defense came up big. Offensively the Broncos scored an insurance goal in the last three minutes of the game when senior Corey Landry made a crossing pass that connected with senior John Gardner who was able to head the ball past the Red Raider goalie. The 2-0 victory is Alvirne’s fourth shutout of the season giving the Broncos a final record of 5- 10-1.
