Reasons to become a member of SLaM… Membership of the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust is free and anybody who is over 16 and who lives in England may join.

Help us to put mental health on the map If you believe that mental health services are important, then we hope you will say so, by joining us.

Put yourself forward for election As a member, you can stand in the elections for our Members’ Council, which has a statutory (legal) role in overseeing the organisation’s strategic direction. There are seats on the Members’ Council for staff, service users, carers and the public.

Sign up and have a vote If you are a member, you can vote for who sits on our Members’ Council.

Help to determine our priorities As an NHS Foundation Trust, our Board of Directors has a statutory responsibility to listen to the views of the Members’ Council on issues such as determining our priorities for the future. As a member, you decide who sits on the Council.

Contribute to the voice of SLaM Membership enables service users, carers, health and social care professionals to come together and create a powerful voice to lobby for informed public debate about mental health issues. You don’t need to agree with everything the Trust does in order to become a member - the only belief we ask you to share, is in the rights of people with mental health problems to be treated with dignity and respect, and to receive effective care and treatment.

Help us to make the most of membership By becoming a member, you have an opportunity to influence how membership of SLaM should work. What improvements can we make?

Make us truly representative

Mental health and well being is an issue for everyone. We need a broad range of opinion, not just health and social care professionals, to help us make the best possible decisions about how we provide healthcare. We also need to ensure that everyone is represented -including service users, carers and the public.

What does becoming a member actually mean? If you become a member of the Trust, you can help ensure that we are more accountable to the people we provide services for, and that we are better at listening to people’s views.

We’d like members to be active in helping shape our services for the future, but it is up to you to decide how much you want to get involved. There is no cost involved in joining. You’ll be invited to at- tend events and you’ll receive regular information about the Trust. We will also ensure that you are consulted on specific issues affecting the Trust.

South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust provides the wid- est range of NHS mental health services in the UK. We also provide substance misuse services for people who are addicted to drugs and / or alcohol. Our services include the Maudsley Hospital and Bethlem Royal Hospital. We work closely with the Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College London. We are part of King’s Health Partners Academic Health Sciences Centre.
