CORNWALL COLLEGE STEM SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING & MATHS
The fourth and final element is a proposal for Skills Training & Continuing Professional Development which will establish Goonhilly as a centre for practical skills training tailored to address identified industry skills gaps by utilising the unique facilities and by providing access to inspiring space industry professionals.
GES Ltd is working closely with many education and outreach providers to identify the best ways of proceeding
along this exciting path with STEM as the constant focus. The company is taking a lead from the European Space Education Resource Office for the UK (‘UK-ESERO’) whose role is to use space to enhance and support STEM teaching & learning in the UK. This is not surprising as Ian Jones, CEO of GES Ltd., helped to set up UK-ESERO on the campus of York University in 2004. This campus is also home to the National STEM Centre and the National Science Learning Centre.
There are seven regional space ambassadors associated with the ESERO-UK project; they can each be freely contacted for advice and guidance on space activities and useful teaching resources. The South West region Space Ambassador is Mike Grocott, a Physics Advanced Skills Teacher (AST) at Callington Community College where he established the Callington Space Centre as an educational resource.
Every aspect of the practical and operational role of Goonhilly Space Science Park has at least one, and usually more, STEM subjects at its foundation. This presents a whole host of exciting opportunities for inspiring people of all ages to take a greater interest in the study of STEM subjects. On the science front, there is space exploration and radio astronomy, requiring an understanding of the fundamental laws of the natural world (and hence the universe). The space industry is synonymous with ‘hi- tech’, so technology will be at the heart of every element
