AS Drama and Theatre Studies

The students undertook two devised pieces this year, both of them inspired by the practitioner Bertolt Brecht. His Epic Theatre was designed to encourage an objective distance in the audience.

A variety of techniques were employed to achieve this, such as placing scenes out of chronological order, the use of scene titles, jokes and exaggerated characterisations. Humour and satire were also used to invite the audience to question and challenge established notions. The groups looked at current social concerns and used Brechtian ideas when devising their work.

One piece, entitled Blown Out of Proportion, examined the role of the media by using the story of a soldier who, following misrepresentation in the press, is sent on active duty. Oli Harries delivered a powerful performance as the soldier, whilst Jonathan Stubbs, Harry O’Conor, James Holder and Rob Lathan impressed in a variety of roles. In Behind Closed Doors the nature of bureaucracy and the control of information was the focus. Edwin Howe showed his skill in comic timing, while Ed Tonkin, Collins Nemi, Luke Scholefield and Aamir Razzak were excellent. Some wonderful ensemble work was demonstrated as well as inventive story telling and imaginative approaches to design.

For AS Drama and Theatre Studies two practitioners are studied; the second one this year was Peter Brook. He aimed to strip away non-essential elements of theatre, to find the impulse behind each word and to cement a sense of ritual along with a shared experience with the audience. The candidates were required to explore a text using some of Brook’s ideas. They looked at Harold Pinter’s The Caretaker and used some of his rehearsal methods to prepare for their exam. There were some outstanding performances, including those from Harry O’Conor, Luke Scholefield and Jonathan Stubbs - who played the selfish and irritating tramp, Davies. Oli Harries was a menacing Mick, while Ed Tonkin portrayed a vulnerable and damaged Aston.

Congratulations to all the boys for an extremely high standard of performance.
