50 CHARIT Y

QEH Children in Need 2010

The first event of this year’s record-breaking fundraiser was our very own version of the popular BBC programme, The Apprentice. A male staff team, ‘Team V…’, led by Mr P Davies, went head to head with a female staff team, ‘The Domestic Goddesses’, led by Miss Pugh, in a feisty two hour bake-off. The aim? To make as much profit as possible from £30 worth of ingredients in a competitive cake sale. The prize? To become the next apprentice of ‘Lord Bateson’.

On the Thursday evening chaos ensued in the school kitchens; an atmosphere similar to that felt at the Friday break time cake sale pervaded. The highlights of these events were relayed in a BAFTA-deserving video to a packed QEH theatre audience. The following Monday saw the announcement of the winning team which had transformed flour into the most ‘dough’. ‘Team V…’ claimed the monetary victory whereas ‘The Domestic Goddesses’ were left cleaning up in second place. The remaining contestants were then grilled by Lord Bateson and his two assistants, Nick and Margaret (aka Mr Ryan and Mrs Cosgrove), until only two remained. Mr Davies cooked up an appetising argument and controversially claimed the title of Lord Bateson’s next Apprentice.

The Children in Need day entertainments began with staff singing a rendition of Enrique Iglesias’ world-renowned love song, Hero. Adapted to include a chorus in Spanish by the Modern Languages department, Mr Bateson and Mr Ryan sang the parts of two ‘star crossed lovers’, ‘in too deep’.

An extended break time saw events such as ‘Beat the Goalie’, ‘Shoot the Hoop’ and an adapted version of ‘Soak the Teacher.’ Of the Senior Prefects, George Bamber, Tom Pearce and Ed Blancke, the QEH boys voted for Ed to face the stocks along with the Head of Biology, Mr Brown.

However, Mr Brown wasn’t the only Biologist to make a sacrifice. Mr Dunn bravely donated his leg hair to the cause, while the Year 9s raised £323.23 in a cake sale inspired by the previous week’s success.

This year, the annual lunchtime sporting event was the fiercely competitive ‘Interdepartmental Dodgeball’, where teachers from Maths and Sciences took on a team from Humanities and those from Modern Languages surprisingly defeated a team of teachers who are supposedly Sports experts.

On the following Friday, QEH boys and Redland girls banded together to relish the annual Sixth Form X Factor competition. In recent years, competitors have worn tight-fitted clothing, danced 90s style and sung out of tune. Fortunately, this year was no exception. Acts such as ‘Tom Jones’ (James Philpott and Robert Lathan) and the ‘Moth Popes’ (Raymond Hodges, Yan White and Sukhpal Bal) took this unique opportunity to express their inner selves, whilst the ‘Amazin’ Squad’ (Alfie Reynolds, Ali Warren, Alex Glover, Piers Pegrum and Joe Payne) accessed a new level of performance, leaving teachers and teens stunned.

Slightly more fitting for the occasion was Ed Blancke and Matt Gardner’s version of the No 1 hit ‘California Gurls’ by Katy Perry and Snoop Dogg, as well as the cover of ‘Sugarlumps’ from the TV series Flight of The Concords from George Bamber, Jack O’Dea and Ed Wren. The penultimate act came from Sukhpal Bal and Jack Calway, who intriguingly performed one of their former GCSE set text poems by ultraviolet light. Before the judges announced the winning act - ‘Boyzone vs Spice Girls’ dance by Redland High girls - professional dancer Troy Baker, accompanied by Ed Blancke, closed the show with a prepared routine to a medley of Michael Jackson hits and classic boyband belters. It was a fitting end to an extraordinary whole school effort to raise money for charity while having a great time.

On behalf of the Senior Prefects, I would like to thank both the teachers and boys for all their efforts in raising over £3,650 for Children in Need: a record breaking total for a worthy cause, which year on year brings out the best in QEH boys.

Edward Blancke
