SPORT - CRICKET 129
We took the confidence gained from this performance into our next match against Queen’s Taunton in which we batted first yet again. We made an excellent total thanks to good batting from our openers Laurence-Elliot Key and Jack Millar (90 not out) who helped to take our total to 188 for 9. Confident from this, we took key wickets early on thanks to an excellent opening spell from Jack Blake. We maintained this good bowling throughout their innings as we skittled them out for just 94.
Our winning streak continued against Beechen Cliff. Once again we batted first, with good batting from our openers Laurence-Elliot Key and Sam Goodhind, who scored 34, getting us off to a solid start backed up by Callum Roberts. Jack Blake again took early wickets in a very good bowling spell, and also wickets fell to Will Bamber, so we got them all out for 88.
Our final match was against King’s Gloucester. This time we bowled first and successfully bowled them out for 97 in a strong team performance; we reached our target with many overs to spare.
We ended the season by travelling up to Liverpool for a two day tour. On the first day we played Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School, Blackburn, in a 20/20 match. They batted first, scoring a 120 with some economical bowling from Jack Blake and Callum Roberts. A steady contribution from Laurence-Elliot Key and 77 off 53 balls from Callum Roberts saw us win easily in the end.
The next day, following a tour of Liverpool docks, we played Merchant Taylors’ in a 30 over match. They batted first, scoring 190 for just one wicket and we were left to rue a few missed opportunities. We could only match 129 all out in our reply, although a late flurry from Umar Qadir added much entertainment. Overall, it was an excellent tour and many thanks to Mr Albon for organising it and for Mr Pandya for accompanying us.
At the end of the season our top two run scorers were Jack Millar (298 runs, average 74.5, strike rate 134.8) and Callum Roberts (204 runs, average 68.0, strike rate 114.6). Our top bowlers were Jack Millar (10 wickets, average 11.7, economy 4.8), Jack Blake (8 wickets, average 17.0, economy 4.5) and Will Bamber (7 wickets, average 16.3, economy 5.6).
The improvement clearly shown in our performance this year has been great to see and I hope that we can all move into the Senior teams with equal success next year. On behalf of the team, I would like to thank Dr. Kyle for coaching us over the past two seasons; he has undoubtedly contributed greatly to our success with his vast knowledge of the game.
Jack Millar
(Dr Kyle would like to thank Jack Millar for captaining the side with aplomb, leading by example on and off the field; his efforts were much appreciated by all.)
