08 JUNIOR SCHOOL
Year 5LR Kenya
Loldia School and the International Schools’ Award
QEH has become linked with Loldia school in Naivasha, Kenya, through our work towards the International Schools’ Award. Loldia is a primary school, but there are children of a wide variety of ages.
The boys in 5RL prepared a project earlier in the year named ‘Through our window’ as a way of introducing themselves and way of life to the children in Kenya. We sent photographs and pieces of written work in a book to Loldia School and were pleased to get an email back to say how well it had been received.
Towards the end of the Easter term we received a book back from Loldia with their project for us to look at. It included lots of detail of the children’s lives in and out of school and was very well written and illustrated.
As part of our charity work we set about raising money to help Loldia school to employ a new teacher. Through hard work and the generosity of all we managed to reach our target of £2500, and in fact just exceeded it. It was felt by the school that rather than employ one full time teacher, they would like to employ three teaching assistants. These individuals will be helping the younger children in the school in many ways, including English teaching and catching up with work that has been missed.
The organiser of the Loldia School Fund wrote to us this term to let us know about the individuals who have been employed: Linda Auma, Juweria Ali and Samuel Gatonga. They are all past pupils of the school who have gone on to secondary school. We were delighted to hear this term that those employed are also able to begin their full teacher training whilst at Loldia, if that is what they wish to do.
QEH Junior School has now reached the Intermediate level of the International Schools’ Award through the international aspects of what is taught and included in the life of the school. The link with Loldia is a very important part of this and as we look forward to next year, we will be pushing to strengthen the link between the two schools and alongside this to gain the full International Schools’ Award.
