New ranger has wild plans for country park

L

eavesden Country Park‘s warden has been delighted with the warm welcome he has

received from locals since starting his new role. Father-of-one Damian Waller took over from

the popular Martin Brook in August. Damian, 37, who commutes from Epping to his

new patch, has an interesting background. He said: ―Before getting the role here I worked

for 10 years as an environmental consultant. A lot of my work involved researching snakes, newts and lizards which are native to the UK. ―I was delighted to get the role as park warden

and people have been really friendly towards me. I‘ve been impressed with the way people treat the park and I hope I can make it even more interesting, safe and enjoyable to visit.‖ Damian, who has a degree in animal biology,

plans to work closely with community groups and schools to get people involved. He said: ―I want to attract more wildlife to the

Damian Waller

park and one way of doing this is to plant new flowers such as native daffodils, snow drops and wild garlic. ―I have noticed a kestrel flying locally and we

are thinking about introducing a bird box at the top of a disused telegraph pole.‖ He added that he hoped to build on the good

works of his predecessor and carry out wildlife surveys within the park. Away from work Damian likes to look after his

11-month-old son William and his hobbies all revolve around nature and wildlife. Damian‘s patch also covers the Aquadrome in by Jerry Lyons

Rickmansworth.
