Hudson Solid Waste and Recycling Contract Reduced by $96,000

by Doug Robinson For the Hudson homeowner, a savings of $96,000 represents an approximate 3 cents savings per thousand on their tax bill. Or, a tax savings of approaching $92 dollars for every Hudson home. The 6 percent in expenses was a direct result of the hard work from Hudson’s Road Agent, Kevin Burns. Annually, the Hudson spends in excess of $1.5 million for the

removal of trash. As Hudson’s present contract with Pinard Waste is approaching the completion of its contract, Burns sent “detailed bid packages to 10 interested vendors. In addition, Request for Bids was also advertised in various newspapers. Six vendors solicited proposals to collect Hudson’s solid waste

and recycling waste. The new contract, which was recently approved by Selectmen, will go into effect July 1, 2012. Those participating with Hudson solid waste and recycling

program will be required to make several adjustments. “Our current five years Solid Waste and Recycling Contract are set to expire on June 30, 2012,” commented Burns to the Board of Selectmen. “With that in mind I prepared a detailed bid specification for a new, completely automated, solid waste contract. The new system would continue with the automated collection of solid waste in a single 64-gallon totter weekly.

It

would eliminate the use of a second totter for solid waste that is currently allowed. It would

also implement the automated collection of recycling. Effective July 1, 2012, all recycling will be single stream, using 96 gallon totter, provided by the contractor, and wail be collected every other week.” Those residents, who have currently purchased a second trash

totter, will not be allowed to use that second totter for trash. Only one totter per address will be allowed. Residents will be issued a 96-gallon recycling totter next year and each totter will be assigned to a specific address. Those wishing a second recycling totter will need to call the Road Agent at the Highway Department. While the regular Solid Waste Collection will continue weekly

unchanged, the recycling collections will be changed from weekly to bi-weekly. Those who wish to “voice their concerns” are welcome to call the Selectmen’s office. However, the contract has been signed “on the dotted line.” “It is important to note that Pinard Waste included in their bid a price reduction for the Town of Hudson in their current contract with us if they are awarded the new contract. In this offer, Pinard and Covanta Energy (disposal site) will lower our current disposal fee from $81.19 to $65 per ton. This is a savings in this current fiscal year of $87,426,” stated Burns. Besides the cost savings in this fiscal year, Pinard also bid td the lowest per ton disposal fee for both curbside collection and clean up disposal.”
