Madeleine Garon with Father Gary Belliveau

It is just amazing that so many things are similar between Fr. Gary and myself. Someone said, ‘the transition has been seamless.’ I take that as the Holy Spirit at work. Fr. Gary created a solid community and he literally handed it to me on a silver platter. I will take that platter and continue to run with it. Our vision is the same; our understanding of the Church is the same,” said Fr. Joe. Indeed, Fr. Gary was delighted to learn Fr. Joe had been named his successor. “Fr. Joe brings to St. Kathryn Parish a gentle shepherd’s heart and a personal spirituality that shines through as he celebrates Holy Mass. He is gifted with a great voice and musical ability. I’m sure, building upon the foundation set by the talented music ministers at St. K’s, his presence will bring an enhancement to all that music can bring to worship. I’m confident that his attentiveness and awareness of the less fortunate will be evident in the ongoing support he will give to the varied outreach and charitable efforts of the parish, especially in collaboration with St. Vincent DePaul’s work,” said Fr. Gary.

frequent visitor to St. Kathryn’s is Deacon Michael Clements, who is to be ordained next spring. Michael interned under Fr. Joe at the diocesan Office for Worship while a student at St. Anselm College and Fr. Joe has mentored him on his journey toward the priesthood; he has been warmly welcomed into the fold of young men and women of the parish in religious formation. Fr. Joe also arrived with two four legged friends: Josie, an eleven year old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and Emmett, a three year old Border Collie.

As an enthusiast of his Irish heritage, Fr. Joe’s favorite travel destination is Ireland. “I love to go to Ireland, where I have relatives in Cavan. And yes, I have kissed the Blarney Stone - I didn’t need to, but I did,” joked Fr. Joe.

In his spare time, Fr. Joe is writing the history of the stained glass windows of St. Joseph Cathedral. “We were able to get documentation from the company who crafted them in 1892, all of the correspondence between Bishop Bradley, the company in Austria and the representative in Boston. I’ve discovered all kinds of wonderful little details,” he said. Fr. Joe’s final thoughts summed up these first weeks best: “I am so excited about being here. St. Kathryn’s is such a vibrant, active community of faith. As difficult as it was to leave the Cathedral, the people at St. Kathryn’s have made this move so easy. I have not looked back. In fact, I don’t sink my roots too deeply right away, but when I recently returned to the Cathedral for our new Bishop (Peter) Libasci’s introduction, I felt really good getting into the car and driving back home … to Hudson. “
