over the course of a couple weeks, golf’s state tournament is crammed into two days – one day for team competition and a second day for players to compete individually. If players want to be the best, then they better play their best on those days. Members of the

Windham golf team, who had compiled an undefeated regular season record of 21- 0, kept this in mind when they competed at the Division 2 state tournament at Canterbury Woods Country Club on Thursday, October 6. They put their best foot forward, according to their coach Ken Bourassa, and earned state runner- up honors in a field that featured 11 other teams. As a matter of fact,
Windham was only four strokes shy of taking the championship trophy
home. Windham and Hanover each accumulated a team score of 403, but

stuck it five feet from the pin. He went on to sink the putt to birdie the hole and win the individual state championship. Playing his finest golf of the season in the tournament, Fairweather’s victory certainly took some mental toughness. “Nick’s mental game is great,”
Bourassa said. ”He has the ability to put the shot behind him and move on to the next one. He missed some close putts and had some chances to go ahead today, but he nailed the five foot putt at the end (a shot that was longer and more difficult than ones he had missed).”
Greenleaf was not far behind

Hanover came out on top of the tiebreaker. The tiebreaker added the teams’ top six scores instead of the typical top five, which allowed Hanover to win by a slim margin of 490-493.
“I’m so proud of this team,”
Bourassa said. “They put their best foot forward in the tournament and gave it all they had. They accomplished something this year that went beyond expectation. It gave you goose bumps to see how well they played all year.” Nick Fairweather and Connor Greenleaf led Windham with rounds of 76, while Adam Dolan shot an 81 and Jack Grubbs finished with an 83. All four golfers made the cut to move on to the individual round. Also contributing to the Jaguars’ runner- up performance were Patrick Higgins, Andrew Kalil, Max Masse, and Colin Gerstenberger. On Saturday, Fairweather rallied on his last nine holes to shoot a 70 for the day, which gave him a combined score of 146 for the two days and a three-way tie for first place. The tournament went to a sudden-death playoff where the players would play until someone

Greenleaf will be one of the many exceptional golfers returning to Windham next season. Fairweather is a talent that made his impression on the team’s younger players will be moving on elsewhere with senior classmate Gerstenberger. No matter what happens, there is already a great sense of anticipation for next season. “We are going to lose a couple of seniors, but there are a lot of things to look forward to next year,” Bourassa said.” Next year looks to be very promising.”

submitted by Andy Vanti Pelham Razorback 34, Derry Demons 0 The sixth grade Razorbacks traveled to Derry to take on the Demons under the lights this past Sunday on what was a warm and crystal clear night for football. Derry started the game on offense and it was obvious they were going to give the Razorbacks everything they had as they moved the ball downfield with several impressive runs. The Razorbacks “bend but not break” defense came up big thanks to key tackles by Freddy Stamatatos, Case Foster, Liam O’Connell and Justin O’Connor. The sixth graders then went on offense. QB Tyler Longo made a big throw to TE Tyler Mercier to help move
the chains and put the Razorbacks into scoring position. Soon it was Royce Belsky jetting down the sidelines for a long TD run. Belsky then kicked the 2-point conversion to give the Razorbacks an 8-0 lead late in the first quarter. Soon after, fullback Diggy Lawson’s hard run off-tackle put the score at 14-0. Robert Ryan had the assist on Lawson’s run with a textbook kickout block. The first half came to a close when QB Austin Wentzel made a terrific throw to Liam O’Connell in the corner of the end zone to put the score at 20-0. Jake Kirane, Nick Cunio, Chris Barsalou, Justin Todd and Andrew Schuler provided Wentzel with protection up front. Derry kicked off to start the second half. Diggy Lawson fielded the
kick, split through the Derry kick team and raced to the end zone for the quick score. Jack Moro then thundered into the end zone for the extra point to make the score 27-0. The last score of the game came early in the fourth quarter when running back Brandon O’Grady took the pitch from Longo and swept down the sidelines for a 50-yard TD run. Austin Chausse hammered through the Derry defense converting the extra point helping the Razorbacks secure their fifth straight win of the season with a final score of 34-0.
Contributing to the Razorbacks strong defensive effort included
Marc Bedient, Zach DeBay and Derek Cook. The sixth graders head to Salem this Saturday night to take on the Rams at Salem High School.
