Windham Football Extends Win Streak to Four
remain one of the top teams in the Division 5 football standings, and they delivered a convincing 40-12 victory in front of their home crowd. The win was the fourth in a row for the Jaguars as they improved their overall record to 5-1 on the season. Windham’s Kennie Padin recovered an onside kick off the foot of teammate Ben Shipman and ran it all the way to the end zone to put the Jaguars on the board early in the first quarter. Quarterback Joe Lorenz threw for two touchdowns later in the quarter – one to CJay DiPrima, the other to Padin – to give Windham a 21-6 advantage. Scott Priestley, Jr. followed with two rushing touchdowns – a

by Chris White The Windham Jaguars had to beat Somersworth last Saturday to
5-yarder in the second quarter and 70-yarder in the third – as Windham’s lead increased to 34-6. A long touchdown pass from Lorenz to Dan Cannone near the end of the fourth quarter rounded out Windham’s scoring for the afternoon. Priestley led the Jaguars’ ground attack with 118 rushing yards on 11 carries, while Lorenz completed 9 of 13 pass attempts for 173 yards through the air. Padin was Windham’s leading receiver, catching five passes for 69 yards. The team’s kicker, Shipman, connected on 4 of 5 extra point tries. The Jaguars will try to build on their momentum and extend their win streak to five when they visit second-ranked Kearsarge tonight (Friday, October 14). Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.

by Marc Ayotte The Pelham girls varsity volleyball team had a very successful week by claiming victories over ConVal and Souhegan. According to head coach Jen Nugent, “last night’s monster win over ConVal” featured a convincing three game sweep by the scores of 25-13, 25-10 and 25-16. Leading the home team Python offense on October 5,were Kathryn Mostone with five kills with Kayla Andrewchuk contributing three. Broghan Gilligan took charge
in the assists category, registering 17 helpers. Gilligan also had a ginormous night from behind the service line with 21 service points, including three aces. Showing her talents on the defensive side of the stat sheet, the senior recorded a team high 23 digs. Teammate Alex Hall followed with 15. Kathryn Mostoneand Nicole Gellar paced the Pythons at the net with three and two blocks, respectively. Two nights later, Pelham traveled to Amherst to take on Souhegan.
Before the game, Nugent mentioned, “we need the win. It would be a big one and it will be a tough one (to get).” Well it certainly didn’t come as easily as the win over ConVal, but it did in deed come. The Pythons showed up to play and cut the Sabers down to size by taking the grueling five game match, three games to two. Excited with her team’s back-to-back performances, Nugent singled out the win over Souhegan by saying; “talk about an upset” adding that the
victory “was bigger than Portsmouth in a lot of ways.” In a tightly contested contest throughout, Pelham emerged by winning the decisive fifth game by a count of 15-8. The two teams split the first four games with Pelham winning the first and third games.
Alex Hall (8), Roxanne Lapierre (6) and Kathryn Mostone (3) led the way for Pelham in the kill department. Broghan Gilligan was again in a helpful mood as she paced the Pythons with a team high 21 assists. The senior
Python, donning the number 8 on her jersey, also came up huge with five aces on her way to picking up 35 service points. “Dig-in” what they do; the senior tandem of Alex Hall (31) and Kathryn Mostone (29) inspired the blue and white with their defensive play. Mostone also led the team in blocks with five while Roxanne Lapierre rejected three Saber shots.
Pelham Golf Team Ends Disappointing Season, Vaiknoras Lone Python to Make Cut
by Marc Ayotte This past week saw the conclusion of a Python’s golf season that simply did not match up to preseason expectations. On Thursday, October 6, Pelham competed in the NH Division II state golf championship at the beautiful Canterbury Woods Country Club in Canterbury. The tournament was divided into two parts, with Thursdays round of golf used in determining the team champion. Each of the twelve schools competing sent
eight golfers onto the links to play 18 holes as opposed to the nine holes played in matches during the regular season. Each player submitted a score with the team’s top five scores being added together to arrive at a team total. Pelham finished a disappointing 10th, as cold temperatures, gusting winds, and a little bit of tournament jitters brought the Python five in with a team total of (451), forty-eight strokes behind state champ Hanover. The Marauders (403) were awarded the state title over local favorite Windham (403) by means of the tie-
breaker system which matched cards of the team’s sixth best score. Thursday’s round, although used to determine the team state champs, was also used as the first of two rounds in determining the individual state champion. The top 24 scorers (and ties) qualified to advance to the second round of play which took place two days later on Saturday. The individual’s score from each of the two rounds was then added together to get a 36 hole total, with the trophy being awarded to the player with the lowest two day aggregate. The Python’s team finish
reflected individual play that was just not up to par. After carding an opening round 82, which was tied for 12th in a field of over 100 golfers, Captain Jake Vaiknoras was the only Pelham player to make the cut and advance to the finals. With Thursday’s medalist Nate Choukas of Hanover firing a two over par 72, the 10 strokes Vaiknoras needed to make up were just too many to overcome. However, Vaiknoras came out striking the ball very well on Saturday, birdieing three holes along the way; “I struck the ball well, putting was the only thing I did badly” noted the Python sophomore. An unfortunate three-putt on the final hole resulted in Jake posting a second round score of 80, giving him a 162 total for the tournament; missing out on a top ten finish by a single stroke. The other Pythons who represented
their school at the state championship in Canterbury and their scores are as follows: Nick Neary (88), Alex Newton (90), Doug Carton (93), Alec Surprenant (98), Evan Sage (102), Brad Pomerleau (105) and Mike Croatti (106).
