SPECIAL REPORT MAKING STRIDES IN DIVERSITY

Meet NAACP’s Mary C. Wright A

s the Manager of Events Planning for the NAACP (National Association for Advancement of Colored

People), Mary C. Wright loves planning remarkable events and meeting new people of diverse backgrounds. Seven years ago, Wright began working for the

NAACP because she wanted to work with an outstand- ing agency that embodied equal rights for all people of color. With diversity at its core, the NAACP believes in recognizing and appreciating the varied characteristics that make people unique. Its members and supporters are the premier advocates for civil rights in their com- munities, campaigning for equal opportunity and con- ducting voter mobilization. In her role, Wright plans important NAACP events and meetings. She works with Ana Aponte-Curtis, one of the pioneers in meeting planning, and together they host extraordinary and memorable events. Wright en- joys working and learning about new people, cultures, and enhancing her life with many experiences. “To me, diversity is the process of opening your mind to learn about different people, and it begins within our own communities,” says Wright.

Her love for planning events turned into a profes- sion. “This is why it doesn’t feel like work,” she says. Working in hotel management for 7 years and Black Entertainment Television (BET) for another 3 years has given her the unique knowledge and expertise that she brings to the NAACP. Since joining the organiza- tion

in 2004, she has enjoyed learning about the

NAACP’s rich history, working with people, and using her talents to plan events for this prestigious organiza- tion.

Losing her parents in her early 20’s helped direct

Wright’s career. She attended the University of North- ern Colorado, earning a bachelor’s degree in psychol- ogy. She credits her ability to listen and work well with others and her desire to achieve the best outcomes with having led her to this profession. In her spare time, Wright has operated her own business, Wright Choice Productions, for the last 10 years. She created her busi- ness, a staging, lighting, and event production compa- ny, as an extension of her passion for event planning. Wright currently resides in Maryland with her fam- ily and three dogs, and she hopes to one day backpack across Europe with her daughter.
