rom the moment you’re greeted by Gayle King, you can see that this is a woman who’s excited about getting to know somebody new. The wide smile when she spots you, the sparkle as she meets your eyes, and the firm, double handshake all make it clear that she is, indeed, truly happy to meet you. In fact, right now you’re the most important person in the room. With King, you don’t get her attention, you capture it. That’s what makes her Ameri- ca’s best girlfriend: she knows how to make whoever she’s talking to feel important…and valued. Word of King’s appeal is spreading—she used to be known as Oprah’s best friend, but lately she’s been getting lots of attention all on her own. Like Oprah, she’s becoming the woman everybody wants to be BFFs with. Since 2006, fans have been listening to The Gayle King Show on XM Satellite Radio, where daily she dishes with a different celebrity or public figure on current events, cultural trends, and politics. The hit show is now televised live under the same name on Oprah Winfrey’s OWN network, where King occasionally films the show in front of a studio audience.
