Salcombe

One of the hottest spots of the South Hams. Rich with sailing history and stunning coastline. Indulge in a wander around the designer shops or a delicious lunch in one of the waterside hostelries.

Stunning views and a rich history make this seaside town a visitors’paradise

THE town of Salcombe offers some of the South Hams’ most stunning views. Along with beaches and a vibrant high street, the waterfront boasts a rich and fascinating history. There are a large number of shipwrecks just off the bay, one dating back as far as the Bronze Age and is

one of only three known in Britain.

The trade route from Salcombe dates back to the seventeenth century at least, when the goods being imported to Devon shores included gold, sugar, almonds and ostrich feathers.

A substantial amount of the exports from

Salcombe at this time were fruit.

Salcombe ships sailed to Iberia, the Mediterranean and the Caribbean as well as the Azores and New- foundland.

By the late nine- teenth century the population of Salcombe had grown to 776, including 34 ship-

wrights and 13 ship carpenters, and by the early twentieth century pleasure sailing had become popular in the town.

One of the first boats raced in 1874 was the Salcombe yawl, for which an owners’ association has been set up.

Salcombe was treated as a holiday resort between the two world wars.

Today, Salcombe is very popular with visitors and second home owners.

Holiday attractions include the town regatta and the Salcombe Festival, both annual community events. The town has a variety of shops and cafes, including the popular Salcombe Dairy Ice Cream shop.

There are wonderful boat trips, and the highly recommended Salcombe Rivermaid ferry is the only vessel that sails the entire length of the Salcombe estuary.

In addition to this, it cruises all of its navigable creeks, as well as offering a range of excursions out of the harbour.

The Rivermaid was built specifically for the Kingsbridge/Salcombe Estuary, and is licensed by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency to carry 100 passengers and a range of the latest safety equipment. It is a great way to explore the sheltered scenic estuary waters between Kingsbridge and Salcombe, while taking in the beautiful views from the upper deck or watching the scenery go by from the comfort of the warm passenger saloon.

The South Sands ferry also offers safe and scenic passage between Salcombe and South Sands Bay.

This 30-seat pas- senger ferry provides a daily service from Easter until the end of October and is available for private hire after 6pm.
