Sustainability and heritage 41

Our research in the areas of sustainable energy technologies and carbon reduction focuses on finding solutions that are successful not just in ecological terms, but also economically and socially. Working in partnership with industry and agriculture we’re making important headway:

• Using a new computer model we are helping farmers in Europe to find the right balance between environmental responsibilities and commercial interests.

• Our work with industry is accelerating market uptake of low- carbon technologies for transport and stationary power generation.

• Developing the world’s smallest eco-home has sparked fresh debate about using more energy- efficient technologies.

Just as we are committed to developments for a sustainable future, the University is also passionate about preserving local, national and international heritage. Looking back inspires new thinking and strengthens cultural values and a sense of identity:

• A venture celebrating aviation history has given our local community a lasting legacy and led to new working partnerships.

• We have enriched the nation’s cultural archive through our study of eighteenth century textiles left with babies at London’s Foundling Hospital.
