Meera Rafi Malek – awarded International Service Human Rights Awards 2010: Highly Commended

CfD considers advocacy by community leaders the best way for a long-lasting solution to the problems in Piplaj. CfD will continue to plan more ways to advocate for basic rights and entitlements alongside community leaders in the coming year. Meera Rafi Malek, Centre for Development

” Case Study:

Meera is campaigning for the rights of children in the slums surrounding Ahmedabad. She runs seven education centres, meeting children’s immediate educational needs, while lobbying the local government to provide long-term schooling. She is working to improve conditions for children in these slums and is working hard to repair the ethnic divides in the Piplaj community. She has led from the front, engaging the local community in CfD’s youth work and peace education. Meera’s recent work for peace and reconciliation among Muslim and Dalits (lower caste Hindus) affected by the 2002 Gujarat riots has seen her highly commended by the International Service Human Rights Awards.
