The Association of Town Centre Management has appointed former chairman, Graham Chase, to the newly created post of honorary president. ATCM chief executive

The Rock comes to life at night

The Rock, in Bury, North Manchester, was set to host a spectacular array of light and fire inspired events on Friday 14 October. Visitors to The Rock

experienced a late night shopping trip with a twist as they were given the opportunity to party into the night with a silent disco in St John’s Square, stroll around the magical fire garden at St John’s Gardens, enjoy extreme ‘Glow Bowling’ into the early hours at AMF Bowling, and enjoy the spectacular firework displays. Bolton painter Andy Smith

was also planning a splash of art to The Rock, wowing audiences with his oversized brushes and unique UV street art. Designed to boost the local

evening economy, ‘Light Night’ aimed to bring together all aspects of the community and celebrate

everything that Bury has to offer as a town. It was a showcase for the late night shopping offer, art, culture, environment, restaurants, bars and retail outlets. A wide variety of venues and

attractions across Bury town centre got involved, staying open into the evening to host a raft of events and activities. Visitors could choose

from a candle–lit labyrinth, artistic demonstrations, Zumba Street Party, music and dance demonstrations, a late night specialist market, and a ‘Murderous Fusiliers Tour’. Marketing manager, Nikki Kitchen, said: “Light Night is a fantastic event and a great tribute to Bury and its community. It is a spectacular event that will put Bury on the map, and really highlight all that Bury has to offer as a town.”

right calibre of person and there is no one better suited than Graham Chase. “Graham not only has an

outstanding reputation in the property industry but also has a strong connection with ATCM having successfully chaired the organisation for three years in very challenging economic conditions. “His personal commitment

to town centres is longstanding and is well balanced in commercial and political terms.” And on a personal note

Blackwell added: “I am personally delighted he is taking the position of honorary president of the ATCM and I know I can speak for all our staff and directors when I say it is a tremendous privilege to continue our association.”

Nine new UK towns achieve the purple standard

Nine towns and cities across the UK have today been singled- out for helping people have a great night out, by being awarded Purple Flag status. The successful towns and cities – Torquay, Belfast, Canterbury, Enniskillen, Aylesbury, Bangor, Victoria (Westminster), Stockton Heath (Warrington) and Derry – have all been recognised for showing evening visitors an entertaining, diverse, and safe night out. Purple Flag is a town and city centre award backed by

Government, police and business led by the Association of Town Centre Management. To achieve Purple Flag status towns and cities must be welcoming to everyone, offer safe ways for visitors to travel home, provide a good mix of venues and be appealing after dark. Purple Flag towns and cities benefit from more visitors, lower crime and anti-social behaviour and improved perceptions of centres. Philip Kolvin QC, chairman of the Purple Flag board said: “Great

leisure destinations do not happen by accident. Purple Flag defines what makes a safe, welcoming and diverse night-time economy for the benefit of all citizens, regardless of age, race, gender, needs or interest. And in a recession the need is greater than ever to create local destinations which provide delight, value for money, investment and jobs. Purple Flag should be seen not just as a ‘ministry of fun’ but as a catalyst for the local economy.” The nine newly accredited towns and cities will have their new

Purple Flag status formally recognised at an awards ceremony taking place in Bournemouth on 23 November 2011.
