THE WEIRS TIMES 2011 FALL HOME IMPROVEMENT GUIDE INTERIOR PAINTING WITH SAFE COLORS

by Mark Donovan Contributing Writer

Interior painting is one

of the most economical ways to spruce up your home. If you plan to only live in your home or con- dominium a few years it is wise to do any interior painting with “safe col- ors”. Most home buyers are turned off with dark or extremely vibrant look- ing paint colors. In addi- tion, dark paint colors can appear dated and out of touch with current times and trends. Consequent- ly the best bet when it comes to interior painting is to use off-white or beige tones. Though these types of safe paint colors may sound a bit boring, almost anything in terms of fur- niture, flooring or window treatments can work with them. As a result, even though a particular “safe paint color” may not be a potential homebuyer’s preferred choice they often deem it livable, at least for the short term. If off-white or beige tones

don’t suit your fancy, light earth tones are also rea- sonably safe interior paint colors. They also help hide scuff marks and finger- prints better than whites and beige tones. Earthy color paint tones, that are quite popular today, are very lightly shaded browns, greens, blues and grays. Again, like white and beige paint colors these interior paint colors can go with nearly any type of furniture, flooring or window treatment. When selecting an interi-

or paint carefully consider the amount of natural light that enters the room. If the room has limited natural lighting then it is wise to use a very light interior paint color. Con- versely if the room has plenty of natural light- ing then a tinted earth tone color is a safe paint choice. Also consider the mood and atmosphere you’re trying to create in the room. If for example the room décor is ocean themed then a light blue

finding the right safe color interior paint for your room or home, visit your local home improvement or paint store and pick up some paint swatches or fan decks. Bring them home and see what colors work best with your furni- ture, flooring and window

treatments. Once you’ve narrowed down your choices to two or three buy small samples of each and paint a few test areas in your room or home to see which one looks best. Once you’ve deter- mined the right interior paint color you can then go back and pick up the required amount of paint, along with paint brushes, rollers and masking tape.

paint color maybe the most appropriate. If, on the other hand, the room has more of a country theme then a light beige or green may be an ap- propriate interior paint color. Also, consider your fur- niture and existing win-

dow treatments. If they are dark in color then you may possibly want to go with a lightly shaded earth tone that will com- plement it. A very lightly shaded brown, green or yellow color may be most appropriate. Also consider painting
