DIRECTOR: David Gelb PRODUCERS: David Gelb, Kevin Iwashina, Tom Pellegrini CINEMATOGRAPHER: David Gelb CAST: Jiro Ono, Yoshikazu Ono, Takashi Ono, Yamamoto Masuhiro
Chef Jiro Ono is an 85-year-old sushi master and owner of Sukiyabashi Jiro, a three-star Michelin restaurant in Ginza, Tokyo. David Gelb’s documentary takes us deep into Jiro’s kitchen and shows the painstaking process that goes into creating his world-class sushi. Between the tantalizing shots of the chef’s glistening delicacies, Gelb captures the complicated, uneasy relationship between Jiro and his eldest son Yoshikazu, who is being groomed to succeed his father. Gelb’s camera follows Jiro from his tiny, 10-seat basement eatery to the fish markets of Tokyo. All the while, Jiro emphasizes the importance of hard work, diligence and perseverance.
This documentary is not just a beautifully photographed homage to the art of sushi; aficionados and non-sushi eaters alike will find the experience profoundly engrossing, inspirational and visually delightful. It is both a portrait of an artist constantly striving for perfection and an examination of a man passing his legacy down to his son. HIFF is proud to present the Hawaii premiere of JIRO DREAMS OF SUSHI! –Jason Musni Soeda
