Feeling past her prime, 28-year-old Nunoe (Kazue Fukiishi - NORIKO’S DINNER TABLE, 13 ASSASSINS) agrees to marry Shigeru (Kankuro Kudo, writer of Takashi Miike’s ZEBRAMAN), an older man she doesn’t even know. In addition to being a WWII veteran missing an arm, she finds he has barely enough money to support himself. However, Shigeru is not without talent. The manga books he writes are artistically successful and devoid of any cutesy sentiment, but when times are tough, is integrity enough to survive on?
Based on Nunoe Mura’s autobiography of her marriage to famed manga author Shigeru Mizuki (creator of HAKABA NO KITARO), WIFE OF GEGEGE boasts wonderful performances by its leads and beautiful, understated direction from Takuji Suzuki. Where most biographies would focus on the great achievements of such a respected artist, the film instead reaches into Nunoe and Shigeru’s marriage and chronicles their day-to-day struggles with an effective mix of realism and fantasy. –Chris Claxton
