DIRECTOR: Akio Kondo SCREENWRITER: Nobuko Nishii, Etsuko Izumi, Akio Kondo PRODUCERS: Akio Torii CAST: Ryuzo Hayashi, Ayumi Ishida, Hajime Yoshii
Orphaned at a very young age, Akio (Hajime Yoshii) spends most of his childhood navigating between children’s homes, reform schools, uncaring adoptive parents and the streets. There’s not much happiness for such a child, especially in 1940’s Japan. Nonetheless, Akio finds comfort in the sweetness of pastries and searches for it amongst adults, who are mostly preoccupied with the war raging beyond the country’s borders.
Directed by Akio Kondo and based on an autobiographical novel by Shigeru Nishimura, ECLAIR not only chronicles an indomitable spirit amidst destruction during World War II, but also acts as a lasting memory of many places in Miyagi, where the film was shot. Several of these locations, including the traditional theater where Akio finds temporary work, were lost in the earthquake earlier this year. In the middle of such tragedy however, the film reminds us, there is joy to be found. –Chris Claxton

JAPAN 2010 | JAPANESE WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES | 149M DIRECTOR: Yoshihiro Fukagawa SCREENWRITER: Yoshihiro Fukagawa, Shingo Irie, Akari Yamamoto PRODUCERS: Hiromi Honoki, Satoka Kojima CINEMATOGRAPHER: Koichi Ishii CAST: Eiichiro Funakoshi, Maki Horikita, Kengo Kora, Tetsushi Tanaka, Keiko Toda
A pawnshop owner is killed in a ruined building. Though no crucial evidence is found, the case is closed when the suspect commits suicide. But detective Sasagaki is not convinced. Yukiho, the beautiful daughter of the suspect and Ryouji, the son of the victim with sad eyes—somehow they linger in his head. Later, mysterious incidents happen one after another around grown-up Yukiho and Ryouji, and their surprising connection comes to light.
Years go by. Yukiho, Fumiyo’s pretty daughter has worked hard to climb the social ladder and Ryouji, the pawnbroker’s son, is now living a completely normal life. Both seem to have overcome the traumatic events of the past – unlike Sasagaki. Somehow, the murder of the pawnbroker won’t let him go and so, nineteen years later, he decides to reopen the case. When he discovers a lead that helps him uncover the true circumstances of the pawnbroker’s murder, this puts Sasagaki’s own life in danger. –Berlinale
