HALEKULANI GOLDEN ORCHID AWARD: DOCUMENTARY NOMINEES
NOMINATED FEATURE DIRECTOR AND CAST IN ATTENDANCE
ARIRANG HAWAII PREMIERE SATURDAY, OCT. 15 | 9:15 PM | REGAL DOLE
SOUTH KOREA 2011 | KOREAN WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES | 100M DIRECTOR: Ki-duk Kim SCREENWRITER: Ki-duk Kim PRODUCERS: Ki-duk Kim CINEMATOGRAPHER: Ki-duk Kim CAST: Ki-duk Kim
Three years have passed since Kim shot his last feature, DREAM. Recording in his cabin during January of this year, Kim faces his camera and asks, “Why can’t you make films now?” He lives a simple life, surrounded by nature, with only a camcorder and his fidgety cat to keep him company. He also keeps hearing a strange knock at the door, possibly Kim’s metaphor for a lingering need to address latent concerns. “I want to confess myself as a director and a human being,” he says.
ARIRANG is a true solo effort, with Kim acting as director, photographer, editor, subject and actor. As his confinement persists, the film veers from a video diary into the realm of fantasy, pushing the limits of what we expect from the documentary form. Kim invests himself so completely in his work that, just as his life has come apart, so too do the hinges that separate reality and art.
MATCHMAKING MAYOR
NESVATBOV UNITED STATES PREMIERE TUESDAY, OCT. 18 | 9:15 PM | REGAL DOLE
CZECH REPUBLIC, SLOVAKIA 2010 | SLOVAK WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES | 72M DIRECTOR: Erika Hnikova SCREENWRITER: Erika Hnikova PRODUCERS: Jiri Koneckny CINEMATOGRAPHER: Jiri Strnad
After bringing better roads, jobs and cable television to the eastern Slovak hamlet of Zemplinske Hamre, Burgomaster Jozef Gajdos, turns his attention to marrying off the town’s 70-odd bachelors and bachelorettes. Having so far failed in his initiatives (which include encouraging childbearing via announcements over the local PA system) the mayor has resolved to organise a get-together where Slovak folk performers, among other things, will help sow the seeds of love. This endearing and comical documentary is a portrait of a town ruled by an overbearing but well-meaning general who’s about to learn one lesson: the heart can’t be commanded.
