033 JIANG WEN
Jiang Wen is truly one of the most renowned and inspiring figures working in contemporary Chinese cinema today. With a career as both an actor and director spanning over 25 years, he has made a lasting impact on the landscape of Chinese film. As an actor he has established himself as one of the most beloved and recognizable figures in the industry, while as a director he has garnered international acclaim and overcome great controversy.
Born in Hebei Province, Wen moved to Beijing at an early age where he got his first taste of acting. There he attended the prestigious Central Academy of Drama and soon after moved to the stage. In 1986 Wen made his film debut starring in the feature HIBISCUS TOWN and shortly thereafter starred in one of his most memorable roles to date, opposite actress Gong Li in Zhang Yimou’s RED SORGHUM (1987). While he has made his mark as a director, Wen has maintained his career as a prolific actor starring in many noteworthy films, including all of his own work.
In 1994 he made his directorial debut with a Cultural Revolution era novel adaptation IN THE HEAT OF THE SUN. But it was his sophomore effort DEVILS ON THE DOORSTEP (2000) that established Wen as one of the most important Chinese directors today. While the film received a controversial reception in China, it won the Grand Prix at Cannes. And Wen’s use of socio-historical drama, realism, and satire in these works has caused many to class him with the socially conscious wave of new Chinese filmmakers. This year HIFF is proud to present Wen’s 2007 comeback film, THE SUN ALSO RISES (2007) as well as his most recent work, LET THE BULLETS FLY (2010). HIFF is honored to have this outstanding landmark filmmaker join us at this year’s festival. –Anna Page
