This is not an actor’s workshop. It is not an extension to Stella Adler or The Actors Studio. With 20 years in the business representing mostly international actors and directors, what Richard Schwartz brings to the table is a very critical and real world take on what actors can do to get set up in Hollywood. From getting legal papers and contracts done right, and setting up your profile via Breakdown Services, to meeting casting directors, and SAG and AFTRA steps, Schwartz will outline a survival list that every new actor should follow to transition into the cutthroat world of acting in Hollywood. He will also parlay what goes inside a casting director’s mind, especially concerning “ethnic” casting, and how to break away from the pack.
Schwartz’s experience managing highly prolific character actors like Udo Kier and Patrick Bauchau will provide insight that you don’t need to be Brad Pitt to make it in the business. This workshop is meant to be a reality check for actors who wish to break into the business. It’s not pretty but Schwartz’s insightful and empathetic approach will provide perspective and crucial tips on how to survive in Hollywood. –Anderson Le

HIFF is proud to present a Master Class with director David Boyle and producer Duane Anderson from the micro-budget film SURROGATE VALENTINE (HIFF 2011). With the advent of online streaming platforms and video-on-demand, filmmakers have an unprecedented ability to bypass the studio system of production and distribution. This has given rise to the micro-budget film, tailor-made for on-demand and online platforms. Navigating this new production and distribution model can be tricky and requires a unique approach to filmmaking. But have no fear! David Boyle and Duane Anderson will walk you through the entire micro-budget process, sharing their expert knowledge on everything from lens to screen.
Boyle directed his first feature BIG DREAMS LITTLE TOKYO in 2006, and his second feature WHITE ON RICE (HIFF 2009) was a HIFF fan favorite. SURROGATE VALENTINE is his 3rd feature and was produced with a budget of only $25K. Anderson produced his first film THE OLD WOMAN in 1999, and was the producer on all three of Boyle’s features. He currently has five new projects for release in 2011 and 2012. SURROGATE VALENTINE premiered this year at SXSW and won the Audience award at SFIAAFF 2011. Boyle and Anderson are currently working on a sequel for 2012. –Anna Page
