DIRECTOR: Pauline Chan SCREENWRITER: Pauline Chan, Philip Dalkin, Martin Edmond PRODUCERS: Pauline Chan, Zhijiang Liu, Penny Carl-Nelson, Lesley Stevens CINEMATOGRAPHER: Toby Oliver CAST: Elaine Jin, Claudia Karvan, Lincoln Lewis, Zhu Lin, Guy Pearce

Growing up in an orphanage in China, Mei Mei (Zhu Lin) dreams of meeting her sponsor Dean Randall (Guy Pearce). Through his letters and financial support, Mei Mei is allowed to receive an education and a sense of family that care for her, however remote. When the orphanage choir is invited to perform in Sydney, Mei Mei uses this opportunity to meet the man who has been a father figure to her. Once in Sydney, she runs away from the group and endeavors to meet Randall. Along the way she befriends Carl (Lincoln Lewis), falls in with some bad company, has a few Aussie adventures, and all beliefs about Randall’s supposedly “Brady Bunch” life (as depicted in his letters) are confronted.

33 POSTCARDS is a story of belonging and redemption, but most importantly it explores what two people from very different worlds have in common. An Australian and Chinese co-production, the film employs iconic imagery of Sydney and the countryside of China, along with a wonderful melding of Australian and Chinese music. However, 33 POSTCARDS is a universal story that is sure to please any audience. –Mia Robinson

ELITE SQUAD: THE ENEMY WITHIN

TROPA DE ELITE: O INIMIGO AGORA E OUTRO HAWAII PREMIERE SATURDAY, OCT. 15 | 9:00 PM | REGAL DOLE

BRAZIL 2011 | PORTUGUESE WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES | 115M DIRECTOR: Jose Padilha SCREENWRITER: Braulio Mantovani PRODUCERS: Marcos Prado, Malu Miranda CINEMATOGRAPHER: Lula Carvalho CAST: Andre Ramiro, Irandhir Santos, Milhem Cortaz, Wagner Moura

The biggest film in South American cinema history, ELITE SQUAD: THE ENEMY WITHIN sees revered Lieutenant-Colonel Roberto Nascimento and his second in command Andre Matias facing battles both on the streets and within the corrupt political system of Rio de Janeiro. Following the bloody aftermath of a disastrously handled prison riot, Nascimento gets caught in a bloody political dispute that involves not only government officials, but also the deadly paramillitary groups known as the milicias. Adding to this are his troubles at home, as his ex-wife is now married to the newly elected State Representative and his thirteen-year-old son is becoming increasingly estranged from his intense and emotionally distant father.

Featuring scenes of breathtaking action and compelling drama, Jose Padilha’s critically acclaimed blockbuster is based on a blend of intense research and real events, presenting a devastating vision of modern Rio and one man’s fight against the system.
