One of Australia’s most horrific crimes was discovered in May of 1999, when police found dismembered bodies in barrels in the country town of Snowtown, north of Adelaide. Justin Kurzel’s directorial debut is not a tabloid retelling of these shocking murders, but a stark journey into a subculture of addiction, domestic violence, brutality and sexual abuse.
The story seeps outward as Elizabeth Harvey (Louise Harris) raises her three boys in Adelaide’s poor northern suburbs. After a boyfriend displays pedophilic tendencies, she takes up with a new man, hoping for security. John Bunting (Daniel Henshall) stands out as a charismatic moral compass among a circle of friends who hold self-appointed neighborhood watch meetings at the kitchen table. Fuelled by cigarettes and beer, they cast judgment on those who live among them. Bunting enlists his crew in acts of sadistic vigilantism on those he considers deviants, and takes Elizabeth’s eldest son, Jamie (Lucas Pittaway), under his wing. In a mix of misdirected hero worship and terror, Jamie becomes an accomplice to a spree of torture and murder. –Colin Geddes

Director Masato Ishioka, whose previous two features - SCOUT MAN (2000) and anthology movie TOKYO NOIR (2003) - both dealt with aspects of Japan’s sex industry, tackles the subject head-on in the fascinating documentary YOYOCHU: IN THE LAND OF THE RISING SEX, centered on veteran AV director-producer Tadashi Yoyogi aka ‘Yoyochu.’
The film follows Yoyogi from his youth as a young hot-head and gangster, through his apprenticeship in the ‘pink’ film industry during the late ‘60s and throughout the ‘70s, to his main career as a pioneer of hardcore, semi- documentary ‘adult videos’ in the ‘80s. Ishioka’s rapport with Yoyogi, as well as with other interviewees like early AV idol Kyoko Aizome is palpable, drawing frank details and stories. Though the documentary is in no way a comprehensive history of the business, it’s certainly an enlightening look, given its subject’s pioneering status within it. –Derek Elley
