The day uncle Paul Almost got baptized


It was early spring of 1959. My Uncle Paul was walking around drunk in downtown Front Royal, Virginia. He was drunk and he was hungry. As he staggered past the For Christ Alone Ebenezer Baptist Church, his senses seemed to heighten. He heard Elder Brady Bradford hollering his sermon and he smelled food. It was custom at that church to feed the belly after Elder Brady B. fed the spirit. The good sisters had prepared a feast and Paul smelled fried chicken.


These Christians would have service, then go to the basement to The Sacred Pool for baptism and then to the dining area to eat. Uncle Paul came in just as they were going downstairs. Deacon Potter Johnson and Mr. Isaiah Ferkins moved immediately to show Paul out. But Sister Buleah Maye Jenkins, a reformed alcoholic herself, said The Church was there to gather the sinners and feed the hungry. She commenced to rebuke the Satan in all those who would turn “this poor lost lamb of God” away. She proclaimed she was cloaked in righteousness, that she read her Bible and knew the Word. Thing was Sister Jenkins was a very large woman with a tendency to pounce into the Holy Ghost at odd times and launch into such ruckus that folks often got hurt. So my drunk Uncle Paul was allowed to stay.


Elder Brady Bradford paused at the Baptismal Room and asked if anyone wanted to be cleansed in The Sacred Pool. “Come, anyone, take Jesus’ outstretched holy hand and walk with him into the Promised Land.” Now Paul had come in for the chicken, but he was thinking he could use all the salvation he could get. And maybe this swim was a ritual to ensure that he would be allowed to eat. Besides he was enjoying the attention and he was beginning to form some unholy thoughts about the large and fleshy thighs of Sister Buleah Maye. So Paul shouted out, “Yes, Revuran Preacha, give me a swig of that there healing water and here be my holy hand to sealed the deal.”


Now Pastor Bradford had his dunking style just right; like a pro shoot- ing a free throw, he had his routine. He put on these fishing boots that came up above his waist; he would step into the water and grab a hunk of the sinner’s clothing behind the neck, and he would dip the repentant three times under the water: for the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. On the first dip, Uncle Paul seemed startled, befuddled, shaking his head and sputtering. On the second dip he came alive and belligerent, kicking, swinging, cursing. He shouted he didn’t need “no damn chicken that bad’ and they were not going to drown his ass “up-in theah. Not Paul Leonard, no-sir!”


“They could find some other fool to play with. Naw-naw, don’t escort me nothing.” He got out the pool and sprinted for the exit. The good rev- erend, boots and all, had somehow got knocked down in the three feet of water and had swallowed a belly-full of salvation and had to be helped up and out. He was also exclaiming most unreverend-like that “that drunk jackass peed in the water.”


My Uncle Paul was yelling they could take their funky chicken and “roost it where the sun don’t shine” and if the Devil wanted him, he was going to have “to drown him hisowndamnself.”
