Catch of the week 08/09/11
“I took this mullet of 6 lb. 12 oz at small harbour on the Antrim coast the other day. It was taken on a Shakespeare Trion Fly rod, Trion reel and Trion line, 6 lb fluorocarbon and a home tied fly creation. It fought extremely well on fly gear before succumbing to the landing net. I hooked and lost its mate of similar propor- tions before a couple of guys launched a boat and unfortunately spooked the shoal.”

Before the severe storms hit I had some good Bass and Wrasse fish- ing. Bass were caught on Yo- Zuri Plugs and Dexter Wedges at The White Strand, Doonbeg and at Kilkee. There was excellent Wrasse fishing at The Bridges of Ross with both Ballan and Cuckoo Wrasse falling to crab baits. Jim O’Malley from Crawley, West Sussex had his first Wrasse ever at this location followed by his first ever Specimen Wrasse a fish of 5 lbs. 4 oz.

Allister Johnson was hoping for a double, this 25lb pike

I have met some characters over the years on the angling scene, and Allister Johnson is up there with the best. Allister is Director of John- son Caravans in Letterkenny, and enjoys his fishing big time. As a rule he spends his time sea angling, but fancied his chances at latch- ing onto a good pike. The Allister boy dropped down to Mullingar with his good lady, and spent a few nights in Bloomfield, and was very impressed with the hotel. I was under pressure to produce fish as we had only 2 days to get Allister his magical double. I took a leave from the Paul Daniels Magic Show, and waved my magic wand on the Midland Lakes. Allister boated a huge pike of 25lbs, and will be back in Mullingar quite soon. .
