VDA Q & A

All You Need Is VDA

We discuss the VDA Micromaster with Brent Ramsell, Buildings and Facilities Manager at Hard Days Night Hotel, where the system is making his life easier.ere the system is making his life easier.

1. What made you choose the VDA Micromaster system for the installation at Hard Days Night Hotel?

The VDA’s Micromaster system was chosen because its technology is leading the way forward with eco-friendly energy management, security benefits and in-room controls. It has made a real difference – in fact, we have been recognised as a Silver-level hotel in the Green Tourism Business Scheme.

2. What makes the VDA Micromaster system stand out?

I think ease of use makes it better than other key card operating systems, and touch-control pads make it straightforward even for “technophobes”. It is also user-friendly from a maintenance perspective; if a guest reports that the air conditioning isn’t functioning, the front desk can check remotely and restore the proper setting without calling an engineer. VDA was able to write a customised

computer programme for the hotel’s lighting so that theatrical effects could be introduced to the rooms. We have also switched to using LEDs, which have been perfectly compatible. Micromaster can also function in a “Big Brother” capacity if necessary, by allocating access to designated areas and allowing guests to enter only the level where their room is located.

3. Would you recommend VDA to colleagues? Absolutely. For VDA, this project was an opportunity to get creative with what its lighting system can do. The hospitality professionals who tour the property see how it is leading the next generation of hotel control technology.

4. The theme of lighting in Hard Days Night hotel is very prominent. Do you think that the hotel would be as spectacular if it wasn’t for the lighting?

The lighting helps make a great design

visually stunning. In the Lennon suite, Micromaster’s intelligent light management function has been tailored to recreate the look of the “Imagine” video, with different settings used to illuminate specially commissioned artwork at different times. Upon entry to the guestrooms, the portraits are highlighted in a sequence of 5-6 second intervals, resulting in an orchestration that provides a true sense of arrival.

5. Have you had any feedback from your guests about the VDA Micromaster system? At first, some can be nervous about it, but once they see how easy it is to use they appreciate its conveniences. An aspect everyone especially likes is that all the room controls can be operated from the bedside – eliminating the need to get up to adjust the room temperature or turn off lights.
