NORWOOD TEAGUE

Director of Athletics North Carolina,’88

W

hen Norwood Teague was hired as Director of Athletics at Virginia Commonwealth University in July of 2006 by then-President Dr. Eugene Trani, it was with the expectation that the Rams would continue to soar to new heights.

Over five years into his appointment, Teague’s record speaks for itself. Heeding Trani’s call, Teague has overseen continued success in the classroom and on the playing field, as well as outstanding growth in gifts to VCU’s annual and capital funds. During his tenure, the Ram brand has also reached unprecedented heights not only in Central Virginia, but around the nation thanks to one of the most historic runs in the history of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament last March, under the guidance of Shaka Smart, who Teague hired in April of 2009.

Under Teague’s watch, 49 percent of the Rams’ student-athletes had a grade point average of 3.0 or better, including 51 percent in the spring of 2011. The Rams continue to add to their trophy case under Teague, including five more NCAA postseason appearances during the 2010-11 athletic calendar.

The Ram Athletic Fund enjoyed another record-breaking year with the number of donors reaching an all-time high during the 2010-11 season. Furthermore, marketing and promotional initiatives developed under Teague led VCU to an all-time Verizon Wireless Arena atten- dance record of over 113,000 for men’s basketball.

Teague, 45, joined the Rams after five years as Associate Athletic Director at the University of North Carolina, where he oversaw external operations such the Tar Heels’ multimedia property, marketing, and licensing.

While known nationally prior to his hiring at VCU as one of the nation’s most innovative external administrators, Teague has exhibited talents far beyond the reach of marketing. Those skills have helped the Rams enjoy enormous success on the playing fields since his arrival in Richmond.

Since taking over the department, Teague has helped direct the VCU Men’s Basketball program to its most victories over any five- year span in school history and the momumental Final Four run this past March.

VCU’s two men’s basketball coaches under Teague’s watch, An- thony Grant and Shaka Smart, have proven themselves as a some of the top coaches in all of college basketball.

On the fund raising side, Teague has not disappointed Trani or the Board of Trustees, who knew the athletic director’s ability to con- nect with donors and fans would be his strength. In 2008, Teague consolidated VCU Athletics’ fundraising efforts by combining the Pride Fund and the Rams Club into the new Ram Athletic Fund. This streamlined fundraising operations for better efficiency and success.

Teague’s reorganization has resulted in VCU’s Athletic annual fund increasing by 109 percent since his arrival, with annual average increases of more than 40 percent. of 2013 could remarkably be exceeded by 50 percent in 2011.

Teague is a native of Raleigh, N.C. He graduated from the Univer- sity of North Carolina in 1988 with a degree in political science. In 1992, Teague earned a master’s degree in sports administration from Ohio University.
