EDDIE BENION

Assistant AD for Sports Medicine Missouri, ‘95, second season

Nothing like starting your career with a bang, but that’s exactly what happened to Benion, who saw his first season with the Black & Gold result in the school’s first-ever Final Four.

VCU’s Director of Athletics Norwood Teague brought Benion to the Rams family last July to take over the position of the Assistant Ath- letic Director for Sports Medicine.

“We’re truly excited about having Eddie as part of the Rams family,” Teague said. “His experience in the field and ability to relate to our student-athletes make him the perfect fit for what we’re trying to do here at VCU.”

Benion is the primary trainer for the men’s basketball program, as well as the supervisor of the Rams’ Athletic Training room. In just one year, he’s made a huge splash, adding a full-time staffer and many resources to help keep the nearly 300 student-athletes at VCU healthy and ready to compete for championships.

Prior to VCU, Benion spent six seasons as the Head Athletic Trainer for the Vikings of Cleveland State University. He was responsible for all aspects of running the athletic training program, including the ordering and maintenance of supplies and equipment, coordinating preseason physicals and in-season medical care, filing athletic insur- ance claims and supervising the student athletic training program.

Prior to his time with the Vikings, he spent six years as the head ath- letic trainer at Alabama A&M and a year as the head athletic trainer at East Lansing (Mich.) High School.

After graduating from the University of Missouri with a bachelor’s degree in nutrition and physical fitness, he served as a graduate as- sistant with the athletic training staff at Michigan State for two years, working with the school’s football, men’s soccer and cheerleading teams.

While an undergrad at Missorui, he worked as a student trainer for three years. He was responsible for coordinating the athletic training services for women’s volleyball. He also he completed a pair of ath- letic training internships with the National Football League, working with the New York Giants preseason camp in 1994 and the for the Kansas City Chiefs in 1995.

He is certified athletic trainer by the National Athletic Trainer’s Asso- ciation, an organization that he has been a member of since 1993.
