Map 2. Impact of energy availability on operations

This map is based on the The Maplecroft™ Energy Security Index which ranks 196 countries on the availability, affordability and continuity of energy supply and shows 2011 data for short term security/vulnerability.

Many locations have significant energy security fears

Comparison of concern about energy availability with the Maplecroft™ Index of short term energy security indicates India, Turkey and Brazil as developing markets where concern about availability is matched by the reality of broader energy vulnerability. In markets where there is a marked discrepancy between concern and the security ranking – Russia and China – the issue is less one of overall market vulnerability than with problems of energy distribution within those markets.

It is noticeable also that all major European markets with the exception of France appear less concerned with the issue of energy availability than their ranking would suggest – these developed markets have had a considerable period of time to adapt to an environment of rising energy costs, local distribution problems and the prospect of regulation of energy usage.

Data center owners and operators most concerned by energy costs are larger organisations with global data center profiles, operating over 100 facilities, with over 5000 racks and using over 10000 kW in operating them. As a corollary to this profile these organisations tend to be engaged in ICT and telecommunications.

The profile of operators concerned by energy availability is similar if less statistically significant.

The comparison between levels of concern about energy availability and projected market growth in energy consumption into 2012 indicates the

extent to which concerns are localised. Turkey projects the highest growth in energy consumption of any market and its levels of concern are equivalent to India where projected growth is only one-sixth that of Turkey.

Key markets where the level of concern is far greater than projected consumption would justify include the Western United States, India, France and Spain, and those where concern is understated include South American and Nordic markets:
