The second part of the museum
focuses on the present day. It broaches the theme of the sea and particularly marine mammals, their relationship with the oceans and especially with Madeira’s seas. Visitors can identify sounds and images of whales in their natural habitats and even see life size models of whales and dolphins. Visits are explained through the use of
audio guides, available in five languages. With the guides visitors can learn details about these fascinating animals and their relationship with these islands. In every room there are videos, interactive
consoles, photographs, tools and simulators. The museum also makes reference to the Monk Seal, a species of Fur Seal, which not being a whale, has one of its last refuges in
the world on the Desertas Islands, off the coast of Funchal. The importance of these animals is justified
by their numbers. A total of 28 species of whales and dolphins have been observed in Madeira’s seas. Since the end of whale hunting and with the development of investigation and the activities of whale watching companies, sightings are recorded more and more frequently. Luís Freitas explains that of the species
«some are seasonal, they spend six months here». Others pass by irregularly. Other still, such as the Common Bottlenose dolphin, live in these waters all year round.
