need. In the aftermath of the 1987 storm there was a huge amount of clearance work required as fallen trees had blocked many footpaths and bridleways throughout the area. In response to this disaster, a number of women came forward to help and, without any formal planning or discussion, a separate but parallel clearance group was born to work alongside the urgent building work that was taking place. Today, there are some 30 volunteers, roughly half of whom are in the clearance group, with ten in the East Sussex building group and fi ve in the West Sussex building/clearance team.


The stiles and other structures are built either in the members’ own workshops, notably by Jim Edwards in Cooksbridge who makes stile ‘kits’ for the group, or in a facility at St George’s Park on Ditchling Common, which has kindly been donated to the group, rent-free. Currently, the unseasoned green oak which is used in the construction costs £150 for each stile. It is used in preference to other woods because it is easy to work, matures and dries out in situ and gives the stiles a lifespan of at least ten years. Of course, there are many other costs such


as power, transport and, crucially, labour and they all have to be met from the donations freely given by a very wide range of organisations and
