DITCHLING FILM SOCIETY Ditchling Village Hall, Lewes Road, Ditchling

True Grit Thursday, 6 October , 20.00 Director: Ethan Coen, Joel Coen. US 2010. 110 mins.

A new adaptation of the classic John Wayne movie, this fi lm deservedly won a BAFTA in 2011 for best cinematography. The story is now told from the perspective of a gutsy 14 year-old girl, Mattie Ross, who persuades ‘Rooster’, a fat boozy old US Marshall with an eye patch to

track her father’s killer through the wilderness. The situation is complicated by a second lawman, La Boeuf, also pursuing her father, Tom Chaney, as he wants to bring him to justice on a second count. Starring Hailee Steinfeld, Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon and Josh Brolin. Although slightly violent in parts, this hugely enjoyable spoof cowboy fi lm manages to combine it with humour.

Of Gods and Men Thursday, 3 November, 20.00 Director: Xavier Beauvois. France 2010. 122 mins.

For centuries, French Cistercian monks had lived peacefully as an integral part of an impoverished Muslim village in the stunning Atlas Mountains in Algeria. However, in 1996 some Islamic extremists arrived in the area and, allegedly, seven monks were executed.

Doors open at 7.30 pm. Free coffee and biscuits beforehand and ample free parking behind the hall. Guests and temporary members are welcome for a small charge payable at the door.
