Chris and Jo White have lost none of the energetic youthfulness that propelled them to take on Limes fi ve years ago, bringing fresh, modern cuisine to Lindfi eld’s historic High Street and adding some much needed gastronomic zest to the village.

hris and Jo have always had a passion for food and entertaining. When a former dental surgery in a tired old period building on the high street came up for sale, the couple saw an opportunity that seemed to be just right for

them. Backed by some twenty years’ experience in catering, they knew “this was our chance to bring lunches and a vibrant, new café to Lindfi eld. Limes is what we wanted to do.” With the support of their family – many of them Lindfi eld based – as well as the blessing of the local community, they set to work. Juggling the daily demands of this new project with day jobs and bringing up their two daughters Phoebe and Erin (now aged 7 and 3 1/2), they embarked on their goal of bringing new life to what was then a quiet Sussex village. With Chris’ background in property renovation, turning the Georgian building into what became Limes wasn’t a big problem. Jo’s expertise in Fine Arts meant that she was perfectly placed to take charge of the interior design. She said: “Chris and I have complementary skills and a great relationship – Limes is proof of that!” What they have achieved is nothing short of spectacular.

Fast forward to today and you’ll

fi nd a welcoming and thriving bistro and restaurant business, open for breakfast, lunch and dinner every day except Sunday. The village



has woken up too, with quirky and interesting lifestyle shops opening up on the High Street, making Lindfi eld the destination of choice for many a shopper.

An oasis of lush greens and dark browns, with a dash of hot pink, Limes’ classic contemporary décor and uncluttered style – wood, leather, glass, steel – combines to create universal appeal: simply put, this is a lovely place to meet, relax and enjoy.

Breakfasts are very popular here. From posh continental to the full English – there’s even a Champagne Breakfast – I urge you to treat yourself! The menu is extensive and caters for every appetite and pocket. If you fancy a sandwich or light snack, choose from a huge selection including Grilled Halloumi, Mango and Pine Nut Salad, Char Grilled Chicken and Salad Ciabatta or Spiced Chick Pea Cakes with Cucumber/Mint Yogurt. For those with a sweet tooth, there are home made cakes; the gluten free Squidgy

If you’ve come for the full dining experience, Limes will not disappoint. How about Goat’s Cheese and Caramelised Onion Tart – Salmon and Coriander Rosti Cake with Lemon Crème Fraiche – Linguine with Tiger Prawn and Crab – Roasted Shank of English Lamb with Parsnip/Potato Mash and Buttered Courgettes and Red Wine Jus? I could go on… There’s a two-course lunch menu for £12.95 and a three-course dinner menu for £20.95, which is excellent value. Desserts feature Limes’ famed Sticky Toffee Pudding as well as mouthwatering treats such as Passion Fruit and Lemon Cheesecake with Coconut Ice Cream and Mixed Berry Eton Mess.

About three years ago, the restaurant underwent extensive refurbishment to a very high standard. A large extension was added, opening out the ground fl oor to create generous space and doubling the Limes’ seating capacity to 48 covers. also really lucky to have such lovely and supportive friends,” she adds. I can see how close Grace and Sarah are as they reminisce about past audition experiences Grace has had over the years. “Grace has a lovely voice. She works very hard and it’s great to see her enjoying her achievements. I am really lucky to have her as a daughter,” says Sarah. No matter how old you get, there is no greater delight than hearing that your parents are proud of you and Grace deserves to feel that joy in bucketloads. Whether she pursues her dream or not, I am sure that Grace will enter the world of adulthood as a strong woman with a fearless approach and resilient attitude that will bring her happiness and success. ■

Grace recently performed in Shine Theatre Group’s production ‘Class of 2011’ featuring songs from hit TV show ‘Glee’. It was a resounding success with great feedback about the professionalism of the children.

Luxury care at Berkeley Lodge

My first impression of Berkeley Lodge was one of a bright and cheerful place – not at all how I’d envisioned a nursing care home and certainly not one specialising in the nursing and special care of older people experiencing dementia.


othing I was to see or hear as I took the tour and interviewed Sarah Hazell, the Marketing Director, changed that first impression, but then Sarah herself is bright, cheerful and busy, reinforcing my belief that the character of a business is often demonstrated by the people who run it.

Berkeley Lodge is the newest of the seven Care Homes managed by the entirely family-owned South Coast Nursing Homes Company. It was opened in June 2010 having been entirely rebuilt to offer the standards of comfort, space and elegance that make it arguably ‘the most desirable nursing care home in West Sussex’. And if elegance seems like a strange word to use in this context, Kate Blackburn, the company’s HR Director, is also a trained interior designer and it shows – especially in the residents’ lounges, the conservatory and the music room with its baby grand piano. “This is very much a family business,” says Sarah. “My grandfather and grandmother started it in their own home in 1959 and really we’ve just grown and grown from there.” Today, Sarah’s father is head of the family firm and four other members of the family, all professionally qualified for their roles, sit on the company’s board of management. “You’ll understand then,” she went on, “why we’re so passionate about the quality of the care we offer. The standards we’ve established over the last 50 years or so have made our reputation and we’re very proud of it.” Those standards were very apparent as we strolled round the 65-bedroom home. All of the private



bedrooms are tastefully furnished with good quality furniture and soft furnishings. All of them have spacious ensuite wet rooms. From the day the resident moves in, he has his own telephone line with free local and national calls, free internet access and a plasma screen with Sky TV on request. Each individual bedroom also has its own climate control which the resident can set to his or her preferred ambient temperature.

I asked Sarah if I could afford to move in.

“Offering the standards of comfort, space and elegance that make it arguably the most desirable nursing care home in West Sussex.”

She laughed and, anticipating my next question, said: “No – we are not expensive by any means. You have to remember that this is a very competitive business and we are very good at it. We manage seven residential homes – that’s 278 rooms across the county – and that gives us economies of scale which ensure that we can offer our residents exceptional value for money.”

Sarah went on to explain that although the physical comforts of the environment are of course very important, the company regards its duty of care, physically and mentally, for its residents as central to everything they do. Only the highest standards of nursing care are acceptable at Berkeley Lodge and the responsibility for clinical care. The general management of the Home is that of another Sarah: Matron Sarah Bellamy. Immensely experienced, she could hardly be better qualified for the role, as she is a Registered General Nurse (RGN) who has pursued her career with special interests in palliative care, dementia care and nurse education. She says: “My job is to ensure that Berkeley Lodge offers a warm, friendly and clinically excellent home, providing skilled nursing care tailored to the individual needs of each resident.”
