from them. Following that, the whole family helped decorate the home in preparation for the Sathabishekam. Everyone helped draw different Kolam designs all around the house. Also, one small Kolam was put under each of the 80

pots with a coconut with lotus flower on top of each pot. Decorations extended to the road in front of the house including a large tent filled with posters and other colorful decorations. There were flower arrangements inside the house, and banana trees welcoming you in front of the house. In the afternoon, everyone changed their dresses and freshened up again to

prepare to go to the temple. All of our family, and close friends all walk to the temple together with a band playing nice music with drums and trumpets. The traditional idea of all walking together outside is supposed to alert all the neighbors to attend this huge event that will occur in their village. We all prayed at the temple, and went back home to get ready for the next day, the day of the actual function. On the day of the event , we all woke up early to start greeting everyone that entered the home by sprinkling rose water, providing small sweets, and of course saying ―Vanga Vanga!‖. Our Ayya and Appatha sat in the center of the home while the Iyer (Priest) about 21 of them chanted various religious songs. Then came the very significant part of the function where everyone including the relatives, pangalis and friends poured the water from all 80 pots on Ayya and Appatha. The oldest people that attended the function poured the holy water first. At the end, our two athais and their family followed by our families poured

the water. Sun TV celebrity Sollarasi Desa Mangayarkarasi gave an excellent speech for about an hour. Then all the grandkids talked about our Ayya and Appatha, sang and danced. After that, we ate a scrumptious Chettinad vegetarian lunch, a 3 course meal which included soup, vegetable biriyani, 5 kinds of vegetables, Jack fruit dipped in honey, Ilaneer payasam, ice cream and much more. What a delicious lunch! The unforgettable Sathabishekam of our Ayya was officially over!

Happy 80th birthday Ayya!
