Clarion Events take stance against copying in design

Clarion Events is the latest trade show organiser to become accredited to Anti-copying in design (ACID). The accreditation applies to its top creative design shows including Home, Top Drawer, Pulse and Home & Gift.

New space for Home and Gift 2012 exhibitors

It’s good news for the exhibitors at Home and Gift, Harrogate next year. Show organisers Clarion events have made extra room for 100 dedicated greetings and stationery companies in one of Harrogate’s brand new exhibition halls for the 2012 show. Greetings and Stationery exhibitors will be situated in the upper level of the Queen’s suite, which has its own new entrance from Springfi eld Road. The move comes in response to Clarion listening and acting on feedback from the show exhibitors. The Harrogate International Centre and consulted with Clarion Events and built the halls, which will result in 15 per cent more fl oor space at new years Home and Gift show. A topping out ceremony in July marked the closing stages of completion for the new halls – both of which are due to be opened this month. A spokesperson for the Home and Gift show said: “This fi lls in a missing bit of the show for us. The new space will make the whole show easier to navigate. Not only do we now have these fantastic new halls, they will also include a new trend area and a brand new restaurant and cafe.”

Dids McDonald, ACID chief executive

The action means that staff from ACID will be on hand to mediate in incidences of alleged intellectual property (IP) theft, using the ACID exhibition protocol, and will be offering help and advice to all visitors and exhibitors via their one-to-one IP clinics. Dids Macdonald, ACID’s CEO said, “UK designers are the best in the world and design is a signifi cant player in the creative economy contributing £8.2 billion to the UK’s Gross Domestic Product. Clarion Events are known for their support of design excellence so it could not be a better time to put additional belt and braces around the intellectual property of those who give exhibitions like theirs the competitive edge.”

ACID member Adrian Thompson of Addject, who exhibits regularly with Clarion Events said: “Clarion has taken the initiative in providing ACID accreditation. Companies like ours depend on protecting our unique products; Clarion’s move is a further step in the right direction.” Clarion Events Retail Portfolio Director Neil Gaisford added: “We recognise that one of our key responsibilities to exhibitors is to provide a safer trading environment and encourage respect for intellectual property. The events that we organise champion design excellence and innovation so we look forward to working with ACID to promote design integrity and prevent IP theft”. ACID member and regular Clarion exhibitor Rachel Hare of Belly Button Designs Ltd. said, “I am delighted that Clarion are now putting their full weight behind ACID Accreditation, it is important that design-led companies like ours know that organisers like Clarion are fully behind an anti copying message.” Clarion has also been supported for many years by the Giftware Association and will continue to work effectively with their Copywatch initiative to support GA members at Clarion shows.

Thee news follows that of EMAP Connect earlier in the summer. The Spring

Fair International and Autumn Fair International organiser wrote to its customers about the importance of intellectual property ownership. The letter outlined what was required to prove IP ownership. Managing director Louise Young said: “It’s an issue we have always taken

seriously. But there is now so much interest within the home and gift industry in the IP debate that I wanted to remind all our customers to remind them of their intellectual property responsibilities when participating at our shows. Emap Connect works closely with key groups across the industry – including The Giftware Association and ACID – that also recognise the importance of intellectual property protection.

Isabel Martinson, chief executive of The GA, comments: “Copying within the industry is something that cannot be ignored, which is why we have our own Copywatch service, belong to the Alliance Against IP Theft and are actively involved with Emap Connect in addressing intellectual property issues.” The GA’s Copying Action Group includes key Spring Fair exhibitors Junction 18, Dodo Pad, and Parlane International.
