Out and About

II BY IV creates an ideal setting for consumers looking for a little retail therapy on the sea.

Crystal Cruises aim to provide a luxurious cruising experience, with high quality service, beautiful food and awe-inspiring surroundings. The company continuously refresh their vessel layouts to ensure that settings reflect the needs of their guests. This year the company decided to completely refurbish their Serentiy vessel with only 14 days spent at Dry Dock. As well as more than 500 rooms, the ships two shops also underwent a redesign to bring them up to date. As well as providing a service to customers, the new design of the shops help to create a retail therapy experience. The store layouts were carefully considered by designers II BY IV, with lighting from dpa lighting consultants integrated to respond accordingly. Fashion and accessories store Apropos is

refurbished completely. The store now has new ceilings, floors, walls, displays and lighting. The lighting helps to create a sense of spectacle, with integrated LED sources within display units and spot lighting in the ceiling. The store layout is dramatic and theatrical, with polished stainless steel rings forming screens that reflect the light, and carefully displayed attractive merchandise. The second store, Facets, was also stripped back to its steel structure in order to be turned into a sophisticated jewellery store. Floor-mounted glass top displays are lit with focused narrow beam lights from the ceiling, rather than integrated lighting within the cabinet, as this can sometimes obscure the jewellery. The store has a soft and friendly atmosphere, but the sparkle of the jewellery within adds a sense of drama. Both stores were created to exude the luxury and opulence of the rest of the

vessel, and add a fresh sense of contemporary elegance for guests interested in shopping during their voyage. The prospect of refurbishing the stores within the 14 days in Dry Dock was a demanding one, but one that paid off for the designers. Nick Hoggett, partner at dpa lighting consultants, enjoyed the challenge of the project "Crystal are an exceptional Client and II BY IV incredibly talented and creative Designers, so working as Lighting Consultants on these projects is a privilege that we greatly appreciate as a Practice".
