Edward R. Mercier, Sr. Edward R. Mercier, Sr., 83, of Salem, passed


away on September 29, 2011 at the Courville at Nashua. Edward was born in Salisbury, MA, the son of


the late Amelia (Hamel) and Alphonse Mercier. He grew up in Lawrence, MA. Edward served in the Navy during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was a self-employed cabinet maker and co-owned Rushton and Mercier Woodworking Co. in Salem. Edward was a member of the Salem Contractors Association and a former member of St. Joseph


Church and the Knights of Columbus in Salem and St. Patrick’s Church in Pelham. He enjoyed watching Westerns and loved spending time with his family. He was predeceased by his wife, Evelyn (Gamache) Mercier; and his siblings, Raymond, Yvette, Lorraine and Gladys. He is survived by his son, Edward Jr. and Beverly of Raymond; six daughters, Geraldine and Robert Boisvert, Jr., of Merrimack, Cynthia and David DerHagopian of Florida, Jeanne and Stephen Miller of Windham, JoAnn and David Hicks of Salem, Tammy and Mark Buatti of Salem, and Lynne and James Patterson of Hooksett; sisters, Antoinette Bourget of Atkinson, and Janet Chabot of Methuen, MA; brother-in-law, Augustine Gamache of Pelham; 19 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. A funeral Mass was held on October 3 at St. Joseph Church in Salem, followed by burial at the Pine Grove Cemetery, Salem. John C. Moore


John C. Moore of Salem passed away on September 29, 2011, following a courageous battle with brain cancer.


John was


surrounded by his loving family.


Born in Lawrence, MA, on October 25, 1957 to Charles and the late Irene


Moore, he attended Methuen, MA, schools. For many years John worked in the computer industry. His last and most rewarding job was working as a personal chauffeur for the founder of the Ray Tye Medical Aid Foundation. John loved to spend his


summers at the ocean with family and friends. He is survived by his loving wife, Lisa (Elias) Moore; daughters, Chelsea and Alexandra Moore; father, Charles and his wife Jessica Moore; sister and brother-in-law, James and Deborah (Moore) Sughrue; niece, Brittany Moore; and nephews, John, Kevin and Paul Sughrue. The family would like to thank Merrimack Valley Hospice.


Services were celebrated at Charles F. Dewhirst

Hattie S. Greenwood passed away on September 24, 2011. She was born in Westport, NY to Arthur and Daisy (James) Taylor. She attended Elizabethtown High School, leaving December 1932 to marry Harry M. Suprise. Harry died on April 8, 1935. Hattie finished high school graduating in 1936 from EHS. She attended Burlington Business College in Vermont in 1937, and then went to work for Mitchell W. Hinsdale Loan Company.


Area News


On October 30, 1937, Hattie married Francis L. Greenwood in Burlington, VT. During World War II, Frank joined the service and Hattie followed him to Petersburg, VA, then Centerville, MA, and Camp Breckenridge, KY, where he was stationed. When Frank was sent to Europe with the 165th Army Corp of Engineers, she returned to New York and worked in Poughkeepsie for Railway Express. After Frank returned from the war, he and Hattie settled in Hinsdale, NH. Hattie was employed by Cummer Company, the American Red Cross, Dr. Lucille Coffey, Brattleboro Reformer, and then as a home healthcare aide. In 1978, Hattie and her husband opened up the Lookin’ Back store in Hinsdale where they sold second-hand furniture until 1986. In 1987, Francis and Hattie moved to Wilton, ME. Francis died in 1996, and Hattie remained in Maine until 2003, when she moved to Salem to live with her granddaughter, Paige Abbott. Hattie was active throughout her life and was a member of the Adirondack Eastern Star, Wantastiquet Grange in Hinsdale, the National Grange, Wilson Grange in Wilton, ME; the Extension; Hinsdale Historical Society, the Wilton Historical Society, the Salem Historical Society and the Red Hat Society at the Salem Senior Center.


Hattie is survived by a daughter, Cheryl Todd of Lynchburg, VA;


a granddaughter, Paige Abbott, of Salem, a niece, Edith Clark, of Manilus, NY; and a nephew, Ronald Duprey of Saranac, NY. Donations may be made to the American Heart Association or to the Disabled American Veterans (DAV).
