Author’s Acknowledgements In researching this dissertation, I have lost count of the number of local history publications of the villages of
the district. To list them all would inevitably result in some omissions either through inadvertence or my igno- rance of their existence. Armed with gleaned knowledge from these excellent works before visiting your village has made my task both easier and informative, rendering the writing a most enjoyable experience.
For the many painstaking hours spent by individuals and by both small and large groups in compiling these village histories and the information and enjoyment I have gained from them, I am deeply indebted to you all.
My grateful appreciation too goes to Tim Warner and the staff at Newark Local Studies Library for their willingness to allow access to the many publications in the collection and also to Glyn Hughes and the staff of Newark museum for their unstinting support. Tanks too are due to Carolyn Scott for her patience and guid- ance and to my wife Gillian for typing my unreadable scrawl.
For any errors or omissions, I accept full responsibility.
Artist’s Acknowledgements I gratefully acknowledge the help of Rachel Harrison, Property Manager of the Workhouse, Upton Road,
Southwell, and the British Horological Institute, Upton Hall, Upton near Newark.
