CASE STUDY

The IT Behind London’s Travelcard System The World’s Your Oyster By Simon Fisk, Sales and Marketing Director, Adapt

In 2003, Transport for London (TFL) launched the Oyster travel card. The scheme has been so successful that in March 2011, more than 80% of all journeys made on services run by TFL were paid for with an Oyster card. More than 43 million Oyster cards have been issued to date, leading Transport for London to claim it as the world’s most popular travel card.

Under pressure

London’s population of almost eight million people is added to every day by waves of commuters and visitors. As a result, its

transport network is under constant pressure to work quickly and efficiently.

Behind the electronic ticketing system is Cubic Transportation Systems. Cubic enables almost 10 billion rides worldwide every year, in cities that include New York, Washington DC, Vancouver and Sydney.

A transport network is key to any

economy and London is no different. TFL and the Oyster system are used nonstop and are relied upon by millions. However, the importance of the system goes far beyond carrying passengers from A to B. London has seen the impact of a 24 hour tube strike often enough, but the consequences could be much more serious if the Underground went out of service for an extended period.

Capital idea

Cubic brought in IT managed services provider Adapt to host and manage a secure dual data centre and networking solution for its

critical back office requirements. The company was responsible for the design, implementation and project management. In this case, Cubic uses two of

Adapt’s dedicated data centre sites, located outside the M25 periphery and Central London respectively. The two sites are connected via Adapt’s private dark fibre ring, which allows the delivery of real-time data replication and guaranteed sub-millisecond latency. The upshot of this is that Oyster services run efficiently and reliably with the uninterrupted uptime required by service users. Within the two private data centre suites, Adapt manages and monitors
