around a MTTR equivalent for passive elements. Perhaps ‘Mean Time Between Failure’ (MTBF) would be a more accurate descriptor. If nothing else, it would be an expression of the ability of a given fibre solution to survive entropy effects. I would expect a BIF product to emerge head and shoulders above anything else on that measure. Any kind of industry-wide standard

benefits datacentre professionals, and this could be a worthwhile contribution to enabling greater understanding of susceptibility and sensitivity to change. However, resistance to change, even in the face of overwhelming evidence and plain common sense, always plots to delay progress. Resistance to ‘bad change’ is

probably advisable, but resistance to good old-fashioned ‘progress’ is surely a disaster. According to one constituency of opinion, BIF, and any other change to the way you cable your datacentre, should be met with fear, uncertainty and doubt. Shame... Unfortunately for them, the passage of time will prove who was right and who was wrong.

Embrace those curves

The passage of time sweeps us all along, and will be the agent to provoke catastrophic ‘entropic failure’ within any cabling infrastructure at some point or other. As waves erode a rock face, sooner or later the expensive cliff-top mansion will succumb, topple and crash into the

surf. In this analogy, it’s futile to try and stem the tide, and it’s an acceptance of failure to go and move the mansion. Face it, you don’t need to see the change happening to understand the effect it will produce, you just need to confront it before time decides to run out. The solution doesn’t involve

datacentre professionals needing to bend over backwards; not when BIF should be doing exactly that on your behalf. It’s time to relieve some tension in those cabling infrastructures, and start embracing your curves. That’s progress. In time, we’ll wonder why anyone would ever choose to fear or doubt it.
