FEATURE FIBRE OPTIC SYSTEMS XXXX
Internal Active Optical
Coinciding with this new optical interface’s emergence is a very new generation of ‘Internal’ Active Optical Cables that connect from either Printed Circuit Boards or Fibre Circuit Boards to other boards/modules and to optical backplanes. They have miniature optical/electronic transceivers at either end and the cable is optical fibre, achieving distances that copper alone cannot deliver at such high speeds. These Internal AOCs are also being
driven forward by the continual demand to get more connection ports into ever less space using MPO-type connectors that achieve double the port density compared to either SFP+ or QSFP+.
Carrier convergence
Voice communication interfaces are melding into Ethernet. Consider that telephony interfaces like SS7, TMDS, Utopia, FrameRelay, ATM, PBT and MPLS are merging into VoIP and Ethernet networks. Even Infiniband over WAN, Ethernet
over SONET, SONET and SDN are now being replaced by enhanced Carrier Ethernet. The same is true for all of the old 6-8 Industrial I/O interfaces converging into Industrial Ethernet cabling. Within commercial infrastructures, various I/O interfaces are also quickly developing as we enter the world of truly converged interconnect networks and technologies.
Fuzzy future
Just imagine if these dozens of interfaces could be converged into one optical interface in the fuzzy future. As well as the obvious commercial and technical advantages of having a single ‘Camelot’ international interface, we would have far fewer acronyms to deal with. In the past ten years, SFF-8470, a primarily dedicated twin-axial copper cabling system, was selected and implemented in many industries and defacto standards like InfiniBand, Ethernet, SAS, RapidIO and Myrinet in the very many separate network interface cards and homogenous switch boxes. Soon heterogeneous switches and
