... Border Collies
HDC: When Timba find out that I was doing an interview with you she wanted me to ask two questions for her. So here they are:
• Why do they stare at me so much? • Why do they get so low on the ground like they are about to pounce on me?
These are great questions! Border collies are stockdogs, and
their job is to move livestock (like sheep) around at the commands of their handlers, and sort them, stop them, make them move and go places they may not want to go.
All of these behaviours are an abbreviated from of “prey drive” such as you would see in a hunting wolf or other kind of hunting dog. If you watch a nature show, you will see that wolves (as an example) will drop down low and watch their prey, move slowly, race ahead to cut off their escape etc.
All of these behaviours are the same ones you see in border collies, although the instinct to kill their “prey” has been bred out of them.
