F. Edward “Ed” Williams Jr. ’73, ’76 M.Ed.was awarded a doctor of humane letters by Lynchburg College at commencement services May 14, 2011. Ed has spent his life in service to others. He majored in psychology and completed his master’s degree in special educa-
tion, inspired by his experience working at the Lynchburg Training School and Hospital (now Central Virginia Training Center). He began his career as a special education teacher in Lynchburg City Schools and later taught on Indian reservations in the western United States. Upon returning to Virginia, Ed was the victim of a serious accident, which resulted in a disability and significant rehabilitation. He began working with the Lynchburg satellite office of the Roanoke Area Center for Independent Living, and through his efforts, the center became a stand-alone program, the Lynchburg Area Center for Independent Living. In 2002, Ed volun- teered for service in the Peace Corps on the island of St. Lucia where he served as a special education con- sultant to teachers and to the Ministry of Education. He was instrumental in forging the ongoing partnership between Lynchburg College and St. Lucia, now in its eighth year. Subsequent Peace Corps assignments included Zambia, the island of Yap in Micronesia, and Uganda. While receiving only a Peace Corps volunteer salary, Ed established two endowed funds at LC. The first, named for his parents, Ferris and Rosa Williams, annually honors a student in the School of Education and Human Development who has overcome signifi- cant challenges to prosper academically and profession- ally. The second, the Ed Williams Service Award, is presented annually at the College’s Student Leadership Awards ceremony to a student whose service to the community exemplifies the spirit of the Peace Corps.

Originally founded as the Virginia Region of the National Conference of Christians and Jews, the Center for Inclusive Communi- ties joined the National Federation for Just Communities, a new movement fighting prejudice in all its forms. Patty has taught English to more than 4,000 students at E.C. Glass High School in Lynchburg, Va.
