Dr. Jeanne Booth

Going above and beyond to create good relationships

“Dr. Booth is deeply committed to the training of the highest quality future counselors. Her own extensive background as a school counselor enables her to ensure that her students are well-prepared for the challenges involved in supporting K-12 students.” — DR. ED POLLOWAY,

DEAN, GRADUATE STUDIES

Dr. Jeanne Booth ’76, ’88 M.Ed., it’s no surprise she was named 2011 Counselor Educator of the Year by the Virginia School Counselor Association.

T Whether she is training future

counselors in St. Lucia, helping parents let go of their college- bound children, or teaching classes on healthy families, Dr. Booth says her work has one consistent theme: “Counseling and good teaching are about relationships.” As an alumna of Lynchburg

College, her return here in 2000 after working in the Lynchburg City Schools was a true home- coming. She was able to recon- nect with the professors — Dr. Ken West, Dr. Pete Warren, Dr.

o those who work with and have learned from

Tom Tiller —who had made a difference in her life as a student. “This was my chance to do

what was done for me,” she said. “They set the standard for the professor I wanted to be. It’s the people who make this place so special.” An associate professor of

counselor education, Dr. Booth is proud of the College’s connec- tion with St. Lucia, where she was the academic director of a program to help twenty-five school counselors earn their de- grees. These students, in turn, have become the corps of re- sponders to several natural disas- ters on the island nation. “They have become such a powerful professional force,” she said.

As president of the Virginia

Association of Counselor Edu- cators and Supervisors, she heads an organization that is dedicated to enhancing professional train- ing. A nationally certified parent education facilitator, she also takes pride in classes and presen- tations she makes at the local, state, and national level on healthy family dynamics. At LC, Dr. Booth enjoys her

workshop for enrollment serv- ices, “Ready, Set, Let Go,” which gives parents pointers on launch- ing their children into college. Her connections and rapport across campus are what keep her here. “It’s a special place to work,” she said.
